The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) has officially kicked-off at the world-famous Javits Center this week. Running through through Sunday, April 8, this year’s show boasts more than 60 world and North American debuts. From the world’s first-ever premium self-driving electric car, to the most expensive BMW to hit the U.S. market – the 118th NYIAS is nothing short of groundbreaking.
Car enthusiasts can spend days checking out all new makes and models the NYIAS has to offer, but we’ve put together a short list of five of the most revolutionary cars driving the automotive industry.
1) WAYMO JAGUAR I-PACE
Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with Waymo, formerly the Google self-driving car project, to develop the world’s first premium self-driving electric vehicle. The automaker debuted its first all-electric vehicle at this year’s New York International Auto Show. The Jaguar I-PACE combines elegance and world-class engineering for one of the most sophisticated vehicles to make a debut at the NYIAS this year. The model, which stemmed from the manufacturer’s 2016 C-X75 supercar concept, is now a reality. With a 90 kWh battery powering Jaguar-designed electric motor, the I-PACE delivers a whopping estimated range of 240 miles per charge. But it isn’t just its electric range that makes this vehicle so impressive. In a true spirit of Jaguar’s sporty personality, the I-PACE has a 0 to 60 mph acceleration in as little as 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 124 mph. The I-PACE, which also features of wealth of driver assistance features, will arrive at U.S. retailers in summer 2018 and is expected to have a base price $69,500. In the future, members of the public will be able to request a ride in this self-driving car using the Waymo app.
2) 2019 MASERATI LEVANTE TROFEO SUV (FERRARI ENGINE)
While Ferrari was noticeably missing from this year’s New York International Auto Show, the automaker has partnered with Maserati to create one of the most impressive SUVs to ever hit the market. Last week, the all-new Maserati Levante Trofeo SUV made its global debut at the Javits Center. Engineered with a Ferrari V8 engine, the Levante Trofeo is equipped with one of the most power engines ever fitted in a Maserati car. Boasting a top speed of over 187 mph, 590 horsepower, and an acceleration of 0 to 60 in just 3.7 seconds, the Maserati Levante Trofeo easily makes our top five list of must-see cars at this year’s New York Auto Show.
3) 2019 MERCEDES-AMG GT 63S
Last week, Mercedes-AMG premiered its most powerful model – the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S at the New York International Auto Show. The newest member of the GT family , which can be had in sedan, coupe and cabriolet body styles, is everything you’d expect from a high-performance vehicle. Engineered with a nine-speed automatic transmission and an AMG 3.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine – the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S also packs some serious heat. Mazda premiered its highly-anticipated Kai Concept at this year’s NYIAS. The striking hatchback is setting the tone for a new generation of Mazda cars. 5) 2019 BMW i8 ROADSTER
The first-ever BMW i8 Roadster made its New York debut at this year’s Auto Show at the Javits Center last week. With roots as a mere concept vehicle back in 2012, German automaker BMW is raising the stakes with this new hybrid model. Boasting a top speed of 155 mph and 0 to 60 acceleration in just over 4 seconds, the new i8 Roadster combines emission-free mobility and high-performance engineering for the ultimate hybrid sportscar. The all-new i8 Roadster will hit the market later this spring, but if you plan on adding this BMW to your sports car collection – it’ll cost you. With a base price of just under $150,000, the i8 Roadster 2019 is poised to be the most expensive BMW product to ever be sold in the U.S.
