On Saturday, November 4, influential leaders from across the globe gathered in New York City for ZEE TV’s ‘The Future of India Gala,’ which supported and celebrated the work of Ekal Vidyalaya’s mission. Ekal Vidyalaya is a nonprofit involved in integrated and holistic development of rural and tribal India. The main activity of the organization is to run one-teacher schools all over India in the remotest villages to give children access to education. To date, Ekal provides free education to 1.5 million children in India.

More than 400 people came out to support the cause, including big names like Dr. Subhas Chandra, Founder of ZEE TV and Chairman Essel Group; as well as Mitze Perdue, Heiress to Sheraton Hotels and Perdue Farms. The event also featured business leaders from Fortune 500 companies and representatives from the United States and Indian governments, along with other dignitaries including Nikki Haley, US Ambassador to United Nations; and Tulsi Gabbard, Congresswoman from Hawaii.

Hosted at historic Cipriani Wall Street – a beautiful New York landmark that once served as the home of the New York Stock Exchange – ‘The Future of India Gala’ was a major success filled with cocktails, music, networking and an auction benefitting Ekal. ZEE TV’s ‘The Future of India’ Gala raised more than a whopping $2 million for Ekal Vidyalaya’s efforts, with the check being presented to Ekal – one of the most memorable moments of the evening. The proceeds generated will be used for the betterment of rural India through education, health and women empowerment.

India.com was proud to be a part of #EkalVidyalaya‘s long-awaited gala event, where the honorable Dr. Subhash Chandra was the Guest Of Honor. In an exclusive interview with ZEE TV, Dr. Chandra, Working Chairman of Ekal Vidyalaya, indicates the nonprofit’s goal of self-sufficiency. He noted that Ekal Vidyalaya already has a presence in 57,000 villages, with plans for expansion on the horizon. Dr. Chandra added that, events, like Saturday’s Gala hosted by ZEE TV, go a long way in helping the nonprofit achieve its mission.

“I am really amazed and pleasantly surprised to see [the success of] this Gala, which is unthinkable and unimaginable in the kind of culture we have lived in Ekal for the last 27 years,” Dr. Chandra said in his speech. “Whatever money we collect from all over the world – we always believe that it has to go to a purpose. That’s why Ekal is very unique [in that] less than five percent of our [proceeds] go to administrative expenses.”

Other highlights from Saturday’s gala include a book signing featuring Dr. Chandra, who authored his autobiography, “The Z Factor,” and the Gala’s featured speaker – Ms. Perdue.
Perdue’s father founded the Sheraton Hotel Chain. She is a businesswoman in her own right and started the family wine grape business, which is now one of the larger suppliers of wine grapes in California.
