Rower Dushiant Dushyant’s bronze was the only highlight on what was an unimpressive day for India, who dropped to the 15th position in the medals’ tally with a total of 12 medals on the fifth day of the competition at the 17th Asian Games here Wednesday. Shooters, who had grabbed the lions share of India’s medals, misfired at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range. The men’s 25m rapid fire team narrowly missed out on the bronze medal, finishing fourth, while the trio of Raj Chaudhary, Lajjakumari Tilakpuri Gauswami and Tejaswini Manojrao Muley had a poor outing Wednesday with all three finishing well behind medal places in the 50m rifle prone women’s finals. Raj (614.6) was the top placed Indian in the event finishing a lowly 22nd place while Lajjakumari (613.7) and Tejaswini (608.8) fared even worse, ending in the 25th and 36th place, respectively.

Men’s Lightweight 60kg Category: The 33-year-old boxer from India, Akhil Kumar dominated the entire match against Purna Bahadur Lama of Nepal in men’s lightweight 60kg category gets underway. Lama only tried to defend as Akhil Kumar keeps the aggressive attitude to pack some power-punches and is through the third round on the basis of technical knockout winner.

Men’s Team Group play stage Group B Match: Kush Kumar sealed the match against China as he won the Match 3 by beating Tianxia Yang in straight games 11-7, 11-1, 11-1 in mere 16 minutes.Earlier, In Match 1, Mahesh Mangaonkar defeated Junjie of China 11-2, 11-7, 9-11, 11-2. In the Match 2, Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu defeated Jiaqi Shen in straight games 11-4, 11-9, 11-5.

Women’s Recurve Individual event: India’s top archer Deepika Kumari finishes with 8th position, Laxmirani 15th position, Bombayla Devi 20th position and Vardhineni at 30th position in the Women’s Recurve Individual event. While, in the they finished fifth in the Women’s Recurve Team event.

Women’s Team Group play stage Group B: Aparajitha Balamurukan beats Riffat Khan in Match 3 in straight games 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 to complete 3-0 victory margin over Pakistan. Tajikistan footballer Khurshed Beknazarov became the first athlete in the 17th Asian Games to be banned for failing a drug test Wednesday. Beknazarov tested positive for a banned stimulant, after his urine sample was collected Sep 14, according to the official Games website. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) noted that this was the first case of drug violation in this year’s Asiad.

Day 5 of the 17th edition of Asian Games will begin with another shooting event with India looking forward to maintain the winning momentum and even go better in the medal colour. Apart from shooting, one would cheer as India’s best bets Saina Nehwal and PV sindhu will be in action staring the singles in badminton. On Day 4, India bagged five medals, 1 silver and 4 bronze but the absence of gold medals in the medal tally is severely damaging India’s chances of top 5 Asian Games 2014 podium finish. Shooter Abhinav Bindra won two bronze medal in the individual and team event of 10m air rifle event but no medals were won by CWG 2014 medalist Shreyasi Singh hurt India’s chances of higher place in medal table. India was also let down by weightlifters Ravi Kumar Katulu and Punam Yadav who finished 10th and seventh in their individual events. But one would hope turnaround in events for lifters with another Glasgow winner Vikas Thakur participating in men’s 85 kg in Group B.
