New Delhi, October 6: The government has now made Aadhaar mandatory for all post office deposits, Public Provident Fund (PPF), the National Savings Certificate (NSC) scheme and Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP). So if you wish to open a post office account or invest in NSC, Public Provident Fund (PPF) and Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) schemes, you will be required to compulsorily furnish your Aadhaar details. The existing depositors have been given time till December 31, 2017 to provide the 12-digit unique identification number. As many as 135 schemes (of 35 ministries) including the free cooking gas (LPG) to poor women, kerosene and fertiliser subsidy, targeted public distribution system (PDS) and MGNREGA will be covered by the extension.

On Friday, the Ministry of Finance has issued four separate Gazette notifications making Aadhaar mandatory for opening all post office deposit accounts, Public Provident Fund (PPF), National Savings Certificate scheme and Kisan Vikas Patra deposits. “Provided that where Aadhaar number has not been assigned, the depositor shall submit proof of application of enrolment for Aadhaar,” the notification dated September 29 said. The notification added that the existing depositors who have not provided Aadhaar number at the time of application for such deposit “shall submit his Aadhaar number to the post office savings bank or deposit office concerned, on or before December 31, 2017.

The Unique Identity Number (UID) or Aadhaar is a 12-digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India based on your biometrics.  Linking Aadhaar with bank accounts, permanent account numbers (PAN), income tax return (ITR), social security schemes has also become mandatory. Those who do not have an Aadhaar card or number as yet can quote the EID or enrolment identity number of their Aadhaar application, the government has said. Existing depositors can update their Aadhaar number till December 31, 2017, said a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance.

The last day for submitting Aadhaar to Banks is also December 31, 2017; the last day for linking Aadhaar with PAN is December 31, 2017 while the last day for linking Aadhaar with mobile SIMs is February 6, 2018.  In the last month, the government had extended the deadline for obtaining Aadhaar for availing government schemes and subsidies by three months to December 31. Earlier, those who did not have Aadhaar were asked to procure it by September 30. As per a PTI report, as many as 135 schemes (of 35 ministries) including the free cooking gas (LPG) to poor women, kerosene and fertiliser subsidy, targeted public distribution system (PDS) and MGNREGA will be covered by the extension. An order dated September 26 said, “As a result of the review of welfare schemes covered and to provide the benefits of such schemes to all eligible beneficiaries of the scheme, it has been decided to further extend the stipulated date in all such notifications up to December 31, 2017”.
