New Delhi, December 8: To facilitate ease of compliance by the taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the date to link Aadhaar details with PAN to March 31, 2018. “Some of the taxpayers have not yet completed the linking of PAN with Aadhaar. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the time for linking of Aadhaar with PAN till 31.03.2018”, the Income Tax Department said in a tweet. At first, the 12 digit UID details were to be linked with PAN by August 31, 2017. The date was then extended until December 31, 2017.
As per reports, 13.28 crore out of 33 crore PANs have been linked to the 12-digit biometric identifier Aadhaar till November. This year, the government made quoting of Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns (ITRs) as well as obtaining a new PAN. Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities.
A notification by Ministry of Finance on Friday stated, “ Under the provisions of recently introduced section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (the Act), with effect from 01.07.2017, all taxpayers having Aadhaar Number or Enrolment Number are required to link the same with Permanent Account Number (PAN). In view of the difficulties faced by some of the taxpayers in the process, the date for linking of Aadhaar with PAN was initially extended till 31st August, 2017 which was further extended up to 31st December 2017”. “It has come to notice that some of the taxpayers have not yet completed the linking of PAN with Aadhaar. Therefore, to facilitate the process of linking, it has been decided to further extend the time for linking of Aadhaar with PAN till 31.03.2018”, the notification added.
The government has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar to Bank accounts, PAN cards, mobile numbers and various social schemes. The deadline to link bank accounts with Aadhaar stands to be December 31 while linking mobile numbers with Aadhaar is February 6, 2018. On Thursday, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)- that issues that Aadhaar card clarified that the deadlines for linking various services like bank accounts, PAN cards and mobile SIM cards with Aadhaar number stand valid and legal. It said that as on date there is no stay from the Supreme Court on Aadhaar and its linking to various services.
