New Delhi, December 5: Tech giant Google on Tuesday launched a series of new features and initiatives for India at an event in Delhi. During the event, Google announced that it is bringing its Voice Assistant on Reliance JioPhone. In its first, the company announced that the Google Assistant for JioPhone will be available in English and Hindi. The feature has so far been available only for Android, iOS and Android Wear devices. This is the first time that the Voice Assistant tool comes to a feature phone. The details on whether existing JioPhone users will receive the feature aren’t available as of now.

In a market where Jio has lured users, Google seems to have big plans to gain access to millions of users that are and will be using the JioPhone. The 4G and VoLTE-enabled JioPhone was launched on July 21. Mukesh Ambani launched the JioPhone what he called an “effectively free” 4G-enabled feature phone handset during the Reliance Industries Ltd’s (RIL) 40th annual general meeting (AGM) in Mumbai.

The JioPhone features a 2.4 inch display and has 2MP rear camera and houses 2000mAh battery. It has a single Nano-SIM slot and a microSD card slot. The company has christened the handset as ‘Jio Phone’. It has to be noted that customers would be required to pay a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500 for three years.

Google Assistant will also be able to use the 4G connectivity of the JioPhone to quickly and reliable access and deliver information using Google’s vast information resources. The tech giant said JioPhone users will be able to activate Google Assistant by pressing the mic button in the centre of the device. During the event, Google India showcased how JioPhone will be able to take voice commands in Hindi as well as English. Some of the features touted for the JioPhone include sending text messages to contacts, playing music or a video.
