Income Tax Department Launches 'Online Chat' Service; Here’s How Taxpayers' Can Get Answers to Basic Queries

New Delhi, October 18: To ease the burden on taxpayers, the Income Tax Department has launched an ‘online chat’ service. Using this newly launched chat service, taxpayers can seek answers to their basic queries and doubts relating to direct tax issues. The chat window has been hosted on the main page of the Income Tax department’s website- www.incometaxindia.gov.in/. There is a prominent icon on the right side of the website that states, ‘Live Chat Online- ask your query’.

According to reports by PTI, a team of experts from the income tax department and independent tax practitioners has been deputed to answer the general queries of a taxpayer. It was also mentioned that this first-time initiative is aimed to enhance taxpayer services in the country. The official further added that more features would be added to the online chat system based on the feedback received by the department. A person can enter the ‘chat room’ by furnishing an email-id and ask questions as a guest.

Here’s how to start the Live Chat:

1.Visit the Income Tax department’s website- www.incometaxindia.gov.in/.

2. There is a prominent icon on the right side of the website that states, ‘Live Chat Online- ask your query’.

3. A new window will pop-up after you click on the Live Chat option

4. Fill in details like Name, Email id and Query and click on the start button

5. The taxpayers can now begin the chat session and clear all the doubts and queries.

The online chat feature also provides taxpayers with an option for emailing the entire chat to their ids for future reference.  Last year, the I-T department had set up a new dedicated directorate within its establishment to monitor and resolve grievances of taxpayers. A precautionary note at the beginning of the chat, however, states: “The replies are based on the opinion of the expert and in no manner it should be interpreted as the clarification by the Income-tax Department on any matter.”
