Mumbai, June 19: The first high-speed luxury Mumbai-Goa Tejas Express has now got a new powerful diesel engine that will start its power run from Monday. With this, the Mumbai-Goa to and fro journey is believed to become faster and safer. The new locomotive ‘WDP3A Loco’ arrived from Southern Railway and has been designed and especially run for Tejas Express. Reports state that the locomotive engine arrived in the city on June 15 while the remaining arrived on Sunday. Similar locomotives are being currently used by Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express.

The inaugural run of Tejas Express was on 24 May 2017 from Mumbai CST to Karmali, Goa where the train covered 551.7 kms in 8 hours and 30 minutes. The Express train will run at an average speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). With the new engine, Tejas Express can run at a speed of 160kmph, faster than the current engine, Hindustan Times reported. The report further added that the new engine can run on both alternate and direct current transmission and has powerful 16 cylinders four-stroke super turbo charge system.

Tejas Express is scheduled to run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays during the rainy season between June 10 and October 31. As per details by Central Railway officials, the locomotive has been painted in the existing colour theme. The Central Railways has put in a lot of efforts to make the locomotive look the best to lure passengers. Tejas Express’s fare is 3 times higher than other trains like Jan Shatabdi Express running on the similar route which means that there is an increase of more than 20% in the base fare for Tejas as against the Shatabdi.

The Executive Class fare in Tejas has been fixed at Rs 2,540 without food and Rs 2,940 with food while the Chair Car fare is Rs 1,850 with food and Rs 1,220 without food. The on-board catering service charges are included in the fare. If the passengers do not wish to avail it at the time of booking and want to purchase meals on board, they will have to pay Rs 50 extra per service. Initially, during its maiden journey, Tejas Express was ready for its maiden run with a blue-coloured locomotive which is commonly used in other trains but now, it has an attractive design which is different from the rest of the trains. With this, Tejas Express has become one of the few special to have an attractively designed locomotive.
