Lucknow, May 22: The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to tackle the failing road safety, especially for motorists on 2 wheelers, in a rather innovative way. The drive will mean that all drivers who do not sport a helmet will not be supplied fuel at petrol pumps.

While the Uttar Pradesh police are setting up the required framework in collaboration with petrol pump owners for the proper implementation of the policy, the state government has, however, reportedly asked all pumps to actively report the vehicle numbers of motorists without helmets to transport authorities. The ‘No helmet, No petrol’ drive will continue for one week. After this period, police officials will issue challans to violators.

According to a report in the PTI, a local praised the move and said, “This is a very good decision, this step should have been taken by the government much earlier.” The report also quoted a petrol pump worker as having backed the move and said, “We welcome this decision, we were informed to make people aware that refilling will not be allowed if they are not wearing a helmet. If customers are not wearing helmets we are refusing them services.”

A similar drive had been introduced in Maharashtra last year to introduce a strong discipline of following safety measures among rid. However, the policy had to be withdrawn in the wake of tough opposition. Instead, the state government decided to make it mandatory for all petrol pumps to report vehicle numbers of two-wheeler riders who do not wear helmets to the state transport authorities.
