Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has made India proud by winning the nation’s first gold medal and one silver medal this year in the weightlifting by surpassing her own record in Commonwealth Games 2018. The weightlifter lifted total of 196 kg in the Women’s 48 kg weightlifting category. The Manipuri weightlifter lifted 86 kg in Snatch category and 110 kg in clean and jerk category. Twitterati has given warm congratulations to the athlete on her achievement in Commonwealth Games 2018.

Commonwealth Games started on a good note for India. Gururaja Pujary, weightlifter won the silver medal in 56 kg category. Malaysia’s Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad won gold with a total record of 261 kg. Later in the day, another weightlifter Raja Muthupandi will also be competing in the men’s 62 kg category.

Interesting facts about Saikhom Mirabai Chanu

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born on August 8, 1994 in Imphal East, Manipur, India. During her childhood, she used to walk 60 kilometers to train herself in weightlifting even as she never had a weightlifting centre in her village. She began weightlifting in the year 2007 at Khuman Lampak Sports complex in Imphal.

She won the Gold medal in the 48 kg category at 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held in Anaheim, United States.

She has been a constant performer since her junior days. She had also won the title of Best Lifter at the 2013 Junior National Championship in Guwahati.

She had earlier won few medals at the Commonwealth Games and silver medal in the Women’s 48 kg weight class at the 2014 CWG at Glasgow. Her all-time inspiration has been Kunjarani Devi and she looks up to her when it comes to weightlifting. Mirabai is also considered as one of the front-runners for a medal in Rio Olympics.
