Ace Indian women’s shuttler Saina Nehwal has earned a gold medal for team India in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia. This was India’s tenth gold and nineteenth medal overall in the CWG 2018. Saina Nehwal defeated Malaysia’s Soniia Cheah by 21-11, 19-21 and 21-9 to seal the match in India’s favor. Malaysia, however, won the men’s doubles match to keep themselves alive in the final, with Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong beating the Indian duo of Satwiksairaj and Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty.
India won their ninth gold when the table tennis team defeated Nigeria 3-0. India’s Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan Gnannasekaran defeated Nigeria’s Olajide Omotayo and Bode Abiodun in the double’s match, which was the last tie to secure top spot in the games.
Twitter praised the Indian girl for winning the gold medal. Take a look at the wishes:
Saina was earlier involved in a controversy with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) related to her father’s inclusion in the Commonwealth Games Gold Coast village. Saina Nehwal’s complaint claimed that her father Harvir Singh’s name has been cut from the team official category short-listed for accommodation in the 2018 Commonwealth Games Village. The IOA informed that Saina’ father’s name is on the list of the extra-officials accredited but the payment for accreditation does not include a bed at the Commonwealth Games Village.
India, thus now have 10 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze in the ongoing marquee tournament.
