India’s Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu, today won the second gold medal in the 53 kg category of weightlifting in Gold coast Commonwealth Games. The Manipur weightlifter lifted a total of 192 kg, 84 kg in the snatch and 108 kg in clean and jerk. She also has set a new record in CWG with the lift of 84 kg in the snatch and 108 kg in clean and jerk. Sanjita Chanu defeated Loa Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea, who claimed silver medal with the total lift of 182 kg. This was the second gold medal in weightlifting in CWG ongoing games.
Sanjita Chanu in her third attempt tried to lift 112 kg but failed to do so. Her opponent then had to lift 113 kg to win a gold medal, but even she failed to do so.

The other gold medal was won by Mirabai Chanu on Thursday, where she lifted 196 kg in the Women’s 48 kg weightlifting category. Indian Weightlifter Gururaja Poojary also claimed a silver medal in the men’s 56 kg category on Thursday.
Sanjita Chanu, born in 1994, hails from Manipur. She was inspired by N Kunjarani Devi when she took up weightlifting in 2006 in Manipur. Chanu has also won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2012. She also grabbed media attention after winning gold at the 2009 USA weightlifting senior nationals and soon after that she claimed a bronze at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 2011.
