Dangal girl Zaira Wasim receives support from Anupam Kher, Barkha Dutt, Omar Abdullah, Javed Akhtar after Facebook post goes viral

The teenager who is from Jammu and Kashmir, had met Mehbooba Mufti along with her parents which sparked an outrage among users on social media.

Dangal actor Zaira Wasim’s apology came as an utter shock to everyone. Soon after her apology went viral on social media, questions started sprouting up if the Dangal girl was forced to apologise after receiving threats or of it was her stand on the issue. However, most of social media stood united and supported the Kashmiri girl in the crisis situation.

The teenager who is from Jammu and Kashmir, had met Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti along with her parents and discussed her education, career and other experiences while shooting for the movie Dangal. However, she received a backlash on social media to which she apologised in a Facebook post which she later removed. Bollywood actor Anupam Kher took to Twitter and supported the girl saying she was his role mode. Here is what he tweeted:

Journalist and former NDTV anchor Barkha Dutt also extended support saying that the 16-year-old ownes no explanation to any of us. She also referred to the bullying as cruel. Here is her tweet:

Veterean lyricist Javed Akhtar also tweeted in her support. He said it was a shame that the teenager had to apologise for nothing.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah also took to Twitter against the unnecessary outlash on the Dangal girl.

Wrestler Geeta Phogat, whose younger version was played by Zaira in the movie, also tweeted in her support. Her younger sister Babita Phogat told Zaira to stay strong and not let people put her down.

She had taken to Facebook saying, “This is an open confession/apology. I know that many people have been offended and displeased by my recent actions or by the people I have recently met.” Her post further read, “I hope people still remember that I’m a just a 16 year old girl and I hope you treat me accordingly. In another post on Facebook, Wasim referred to her first post, saying she had “no idea why this has become such a big issue”. She further said, “I just wanted to make sure that I did not hurt anyone’s feelings and all of a sudden it has been turned into national news.” The second post was also removed from Facebook. But it drew huge support on Twitter. Twitter saw an outlash against what Zaira had to go through. Meanwhile, a section of social media users asked if actor Aamir Khan would respond to the incident and take a stand to support his co-actor in the current situation.

Dangal has reportedly collected an estimated Rs 4.06 core, going to a new high of Rs 365.87 crore. Dangal is the story of Indian wrestler and coach Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari Phogat who became world-class wrestlers. Dangal became the first Bollywood movie to cross the 360-crore marks and is the highest grossing film in Hindi cinema.
