Have you ever used your smartphone without an internet connection? We guess not. A phone without an internet becomes a basic phone. However, not with this newly launched app ‘Hike Total’ by Hike. India’s instant messaging app Hike has started a very useful platform ‘Hike Total’ which let users access services like news, messaging, recharge and much more without an internet connection. You must be thinking how it works! Let us tell you the details. The proprietary technology is based on the USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) protocol. It does the heavy lifting of encrypting, compressing and transmitting data. The new platform has effectively supercharged USSD to help bring an uninterrupted experience to the users even without a data connection.
Hike Total is backed by Hike’s in-house technology called UTP (Universal Transfer Protocol) which is based on USSD protocol. The USSD is present in all GSM phones since a long time ago. You must have seen additional services like Cricket scores, Astrology, News and Jokes through SIM kit. It is just similar to Hike Total. You will be able to access services like Hike Wallet, Hike Messenger, recharge numbers, and get news, check horoscopes without any internet connection.
Hike Total is not available at Google’s Play Store so therefore only a few selected handsets of Intex and Karbonn comes with pre-loaded Hike Total services.
As of now, Hike Total is exclusive to Intex Aqua Lions N1, Intex Aqua Lion T1, Intex Aqua Lion T1 Lite, and Karbonn A40 Indian only. Hike has also partnered with telecom providers like Airtel, Aircel, and BSNL to provide low-cost data packs; Hike Total works only with SIM cards of these brands.
The Internet is not required for the services like sending messages, news, cricket, horoscope, rail info, recharge and Hike wallet. But for sending pictures, videos or to make video calls and every other task which requires an active internet connection, Hike pushes some data packs towards the user. So, if you get an image or a video from your friend on Hike messenger, you will have to buy a data pack in order to get the internet access. You will also get a reward of up to Rs 200 in Hike Wallet for buying data plans after completing the KYC procedure.
