Pahlaj Nihalani may as well be one of the most criticised people in the industry, and his way of handling the censor board has made us all skeptical of the logic that goes behind film certification and the decisions of the censor board. The latest controversial act by the CBFC chief, Pahlaj Nihalani was raising opposition against the use of the word ‘intercourse’ in the trailer of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s Jab Harry Met Sejal. However, the head of censor board has announced that he will not ask for cuts in the trailer of the movie and allow the release if he gets one lakh votes! The censor board chief said in an interview that he felt it was inappropriate for 12-year-old kids to hear the word ‘intercourse’ and hence asked for the cut. The Danish Girl TV Premiere blocked by CBFC, termed ‘unsuitable’ to broadcast on Sony Le PLEX HD in India.
The director of the movie, Imtiaz Ali was asked to cut out the word intercourse from the second mini- trailer of Jab Harry Met Sejal for the lamest of reasons, and soon social media was back with the jokes on the sanskari censor board in India that has the most bizarre requests. After entirely banning the release of the movie, Lipstick Under My Burkha for talking about women’s need and want to have sex, the censor board raised the issue from any form of discussion on the topic of sex aka intercourse. It looks like it is time to go back to the flowers that represent the sacred union of two souls in love (after marriage of course). After censor board mutes ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ in ‘Phillauri’, Twitter has hilarious ideas to silence CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani!
However, Pahlaj Nihalani spoke to a leading news channel and said that he was ready to consider the movie without these cuts provided one lakh people voted for the trailer to have the word intercourse in it. The CBFC head said, “If you take the voting from the public, I will promise you that I will clear this word, in the trailer as well as the picture.” He went on to challenge people to gather one lakh votes to allow Jab Harry Met Sejal movie trailer and the film to have the word ‘intercourse’.
Here is the video of Pahlaj Nihalani’s challenge
Pahlaj Nihalani said that he asked for the word as he found it to be inappropriate. The advocate for medieval rules and Sanskar, Nihalani said that he would accept that the world is changing if he received the said number of votes and would allow the movie to go ahead without cutting the word intercourse. “I will see that India is going to be changed. And family wants their 12-year-old children can understand what is this word’s meaning,” he told a journalist. Pahlaj refrained from using the word intercourse even in this interview and proved that he is a truly #SanskariNihalani. While the issue for airing the second mini-trailer of Jab Harry Met Sejal continues, the uncut version is available on YouTube which is thankfully away from the censor board’s reach.
