The widely celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi festival began on September 5th and will last ten long, fun filled days. It will all come to an end on the tenth day of Ananta Chaturdashi. Ganesh Chaturthi is a very special Hindu festival. It is celebrated in a very grand way in Maharashtra, although, the God does get inundated with prayers from all over India. The festival celebrates the birth of Bappa, who is the son of Lord Shankar and Goddess Parvati. Ganesh Chaturthi is observed in the month of August or September, the festival generally falls on the fourth day of the waxing moon, according to the Hindu calendar. The festival, Ganesh Utsav, actually has a lot of history tied to it. It was first celebrated by the brave ruler of Maharashtra, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, and ever since then it has become one of the most celebrated festivals. This festival is popularly also known as ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’ or ‘Vinayaka Chavithi’. This auspicious festival is mostly observed during the month of Bhadra i.e. mid-August or mid-September. This much awaited auspicious occasion arrives on the fourth day of Bhadarva Shukla-Paksh according to the Hindu calendar. In order to cater to the wishes of all devotees to have Ganapati Bappa come visit them at their own house, clay models of the God are made in vast quantities. The idols are easily available in sizes from 3/4th of an inch to 25 feet tall. Lord Ganesha is always placed on high platforms and mantelpieces and nicely decorated for paying homage. There are several ways of paying tribute and prasad or naivaidya in the form of coconut, jaggery and modak are offered to Lord Ganesha.
An interesting titbit is that Lord Ganesha is so loved that he is actually known by 108 different names. He stands as a strong symbol of arts, sciences and wisdom. Every morning and evening devotees perform aartis and offer naivedya or prasad to Lord Ganesha.Once the ten days get over the statues of Lord Ganesha are immersed in water bodies.
