It’s really difficult to be an unmarried couple in our country. Each side you turn, there’s someone or the other to stop you or to make your life a misery. The moral police is the best example of people who ruin lives of people who just want to spend some quality time together. it doesn’t matter if you’re sitting quietly on a park bench, not even holding hands! Or if you decide to just take an innocent stroll along the beach-front. And if you’re caught in a car, God forbid! The worst of the lot? Those motel and hotel room raids. So there, no space left. Where, just where are these poor couples supposed to go just to spend some time with each other?

When it comes to hotel rooms, the hotels are anally strict. While many hotels refuse to give rooms to even single occupants (like people can’t travel along for work?!), many demand a marriage certificate if a couple is booking a room. There’s just no space left for a couple. If asked, the whole ‘sanskaari’ debate begins and the police begin to accused the couple of indecent acts – like how exactly are they indecent if they are done privately? It’s really a sad situation for all the couples just looking for spending some time together. However, to ease the life of these couples, enter Stay Uncle.
Stay Uncle is a new site and the brainchild of Sanchit Sethi who initially commenced the plan targeted not at couples but rather at travellers looking to stay for short durations. Most hotels in India charge on the per day basis – so whether you spend 2 hours at the hotel of 23, you pay the same. When they launched their initiative, Sanchit mostly fielded calls from unmarried couples who were looking to rent rooms for a limited duration. Thus, he re-modelled his entire plan and StayUncle, the messiah of all unmarried couples was born!

The site currently has tied up with hotels in Delhi and Gurgaon which can be accessed and checked on their site. They also have tie-ups with hotels in many other cities like Mumbai, Simla, Bangalore, Patiala, etc. They offer hotel bookings for 12 hours, not 24 hours and the timings for which the hotels can be booked are day or night. In the day, the timings are from 10AM to 7PM and in the night they are from 9PM to 8AM. The hotels rates are not too expensive either and one can book rooms beginning at rates as cheap as Rs 1200 and over Rs 5000 for 12 hours. StayUncle has also managed to partner with some leading premium hotel chains in the country!

It’s really great, the way this one start-up is changing the entire industry and questioning the stale “moral norms”. The truth remains – hotels cannot deny unmarried couples rooms (there’s no law against unmarried couples renting rooms) and we really wish there are more hotels who join the initiative and make life easier for couples!
