Martyr’s Day 2020: Every year Martyr’s Day is observed thrice, first on January 30, then March 23 and another one on November 17. Martyr’s Day is observed to pay honour to all those freedom fighters who gave their lives for the nation. On January 30, the Martyr’s Day is observed to pay respect to Mahatma Gandhi. And today, the Martyr’s Day will be observed to pay honours to Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru And Sukhdev Thapar. Another Martyr’s Day is observed on November 17 in Orissa to observe the death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai. And November 19 is also observed as Shaheed Diwas in the state of Jhansi to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rani Laxmibai.

Today, on March 23 is observed in the memory of India’s freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru. They were hanged during the Indian Independence struggle by the Britishers. On the occasion of 87th Martyr’s Day, here are few facts and history on Shaheed Diwas of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru.Martyr’s Day is also known as Shaheed Diwas or Sarvodaya Day. Here are the facts related to Martyr’s Day:

1. After the death of the great Indian Freedom Fighter Lala Lajpat Rai due to injuries in a protest against Simon Commission, Bhagat Singh thought of taking revenge against James A Scott. After that Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and Chandrashekhar Azad began their battle.

2. They basically decided to take revenge of the death of Rai and conspired against James A Scott. Three British officer was responsible ordering lathi charge on Rai. However, they shot John Saunders in a case of mistaken identity.

3. Bhagat Singh, along with Batukeshwar Dutt, threw two crude bombs into the Central Legislatively Assembly in Delhi while protesting against the Public Safety Bill, and the Trade Dispute Act.

4. Only a few people were injured because of low-grade explosives. Bhagat Singh along with his comrade shouted slogans ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ and showed against them letting them be arrested instead of escaping. (Also Read: Bhagat Singh’s Home a Memorial in Pakistan)

5. A member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), Sukhdev Thapar was arrested when the police located the bomb factory they had set up in Lahore and Saharanpur. However, initially Bhagat Singh was arrested for the bombing, and after that Sukhdev and Rajguru were also arrested because of the Lahore conspiracy case. And on March 23, 1931, at 7.30 pm they were hanged to death in the Lahore jail. Their bodies were cremated on the banks of the Sutlej River.
