Vincent van Gogh’s painting which was previously an unknown drawing is now on display in the Netherlands. The monochrome painting is known as ‘The Hill of Montmartre with Quarry’. This particular sketch dates back to 1886. This forgotten piece was a part of a private collection for around century. The drawing was unveiled to the public a few days back at Singer Laren museum after extensive research and verification. “Such a discovery is always great. It’s really exceptional and does not often happen,” Teio Meedendorp, senior researcher for the Amsterdam-based Van Gogh Museum told AFP.

The researcher revealed that the painting is more in lines with Van Gogh’s earlier drawing style that he developed at one of the art academies in Antwerp and after moving to Paris his work became more experimental. The unnoticed Van Gogh painting was discovered in 2013 and was brought to the Van Gogh Museum for research. “After it came in we verified that it was indeed a Van Gogh,” said Mr Meedendorp, “but we were intrigued by the question of its origins.”Here is the tweet by Van Gogh Museum revealing about the same:

The Van Gogh Museum’s experts believe that the drawing originally belonged to Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, wife of Vincent’s brother Theo, who numbered it “123” in her inventory. The painting was then sold in 1917. Also, another two undiscovered drawings by another Dutch artist named Govert Flinck were also unveiled at the museum after being lost around 1895.

The new discovery has also confirmed that another similar painting titled The Hill of Montmartre, is also by Van Gogh which was earlier rejected. The painting shares the same style with the newly found drawing.  Axel Rüger (Director of the Van Gogh Museum) said: ‘It is fantastic news that two drawings can now definitively be added to Van Gogh’s oeuvre’.
