Veteran actor Om Puri passed away on January 6, 2017 from a heart attack in Mumbai. Om Puri was a known personality whose work in national and international films was immensely appreciated. The actor was one of the first Indians to enter the British film industry as well as Hollywood, and made a mark. His work in international art films won him accolades and critical acclaim. The last rites of Om Puri were performed on January 6 evening at around 6.45 pm by his son Ishaan at the Oshiwara crematorium in Mumbai. A small puja was performed at Puri’s house before his funeral and it was attended by all his friends from the film industry and his family. Various actors came in to pay their respects to the actor. The pictures from funeral showed an entire film fraternity in attendance and paying the last homage to late Om Puri. Bollywood stars like Vidya Balan, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Pankaj Kapur and Supriya Pathak, Nilima Azim, Ratna Pathak Shah, Ketan Mehta and Deepa Sahi, and many more were present to pay homage. Om Puri had a long career spanning 44 years in the Indian film industry and had done a wide genre of roles from the serious and socially responsible roles to comedy. The 66-year-old’s loss came as a shock to the entire film fraternity and has left us all heartbroken.
Om Puri was currently shooting for Salman Khan’s film Tubelight and was pictured visiting the sets of the third edition of Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar series, Sarkar 3, where he was photographed meeting Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. In fact, the actor was shooting on Thursday, a day before his untimely death, and returned home in the evening. The actor’s driver was alarmed when he did not open the door after repeated calls. Shakti Kapoor, who is known for his comic timing and has worked with Puri in numerous movies like Marte Dum Tak, Chup Chup Ke, etc was also present at the event.
Indian director, Nagesh Kukunoor was also present at the actor’s funeral. The director has worked with Om Puri in his 2001 directorial venture, Bollywood Calling.
Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar, were at the residence as well as at Cooper Hospital. Shabana Azmi had tweeted out the news of Om Puri’s demise and had confirmed that the post mortem was being conducted at Cooper Hospital in Mumbai.
Amitabh Bachchan also visited the residence of Om Puri with his son Abhishek Bachchan. Big B has worked with Om Puri, whom he considered a good friend, in various movies like Dev, Babul, etc. The actor had visited Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of Sarkar 3, less than 24 hours before this unfortunate demise.
Don and Don 2 director-producer duo Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani were also spotted. Farhan was close friends with Om Puri and his family.
Actress Vidya Balan was also present to pay her last respects to Om Puri.
Tubelight director Kabir Khan and wife Mini Mathur were heartbroken after Om Puri’s demise.
Award-winning poet-director Gulzar paid tribute to his friend on Facebook with the words, “Is waqt ke jalte choolhe me Ik dost ka upla aur gaya You’ll be missed..”. He came in with director Vishal Bhardwaj.

Om Puri’s sudden demise has saddened the industry. The actor has given us some jewel of movies, like Ardh Satya, Aakrosh, Arohan, etc. The actor has been awarded two National Awards and two Filmfare Awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award. Om Puri was also conferred with OBE, the Order of the British Empire for his contribution in British film industry. The actor was also the Padma Shri recipient in 1990. Om Puri was last seen in the sequel to Ghayal, Ghayal Once Again and voiced the iconic character of Bagheera in The Jungle Book (Hindi).
