Pahlaj Nihalani who was frequently seen in a tussle with film fraternity equally has been removed as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief. Known lyricist and National Award winner Prasoon Joshi has been given the position, said filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri on Friday. Joshi’s appointment as the censor board chief drew appreciation from the film industry and others, while social media cracked up with jokes on Nihalani. Pahlaj Nihalani has at multiple times ran into a tiff with film producers, directors and actors with the latest being Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma starring Harry Met Sejal. And the news of his removal was greeted with loud applause by the Twitterati. The micro blogging site is filled with jokes and hilarious memes on Nihalani’s removal.
Nihalani was appointed as the CBFC chairperson in 2015 and his three-year tenure was to have ended in January. Earlier, colleagues of Nihalani had accused him of treating the CBFC like his personal belonging while film makers and critics have accused him of moral policing and unnecessary cuts in movies. He also ran into a controversy with Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Indu Sarkar” which depicts the Emergency. Nihalani also came under criticisms when a CBFC member described the movie “Lipstick Under My Burqa” as “lady-oriented”. Following speculations over his removal, he had said that he would step down as the CBFC Chief if asked.
