While the American situational comedy, The Big Bang Theory, has a huge fan base in India, they seemed to have rubbed them the wrong way this time. In a recent episode, the Indian cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were mentioned by Indian astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali, played by Kunal Nayyar in the sitcom. And we are not so sure if it was in a complimentary way.
The Big Bang Theory revolves around the lives of four socially awkward physicists Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz and Rajesh Koothrappali. The show, currently in its eleventh season, is watched and loved by many in India. But in a recent episode, a particular scene evoked a strong reaction. The scene in question was a part of the seventh episode of the 11th season. In this scene, Rajesh is sitting at a bar with Howard. The duo is watching a cricket match when Howard remarks, “I don’t get how you can enjoy cricket, it makes no sense!” To this, Rajesh responds, “That’s Ravichandran Ashwin, he is amazing. He makes Hardik Pandya look like Bhuvneshwar Kumar,” replies Rajesh. To this, Howard says, “Whooa, whooa, whooa! Save syllables for the rest of us.”
Here is the video of the scene:
And as soon as the episode aired, fans were quick to take to social media to express their views. What irked Twitterati the most is the unfair comparison between Ashwin, Hardik and Bhuvneshwar. While Hardik and Bhuvaneshwar have been at the top of their game in the past few months, Ashwin has seen a slight slowdown owing to the rise of the ‘spin twins’ Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. Here is a what the Twitterati had to say after watching the episode:
It is surely one of the not-so-funny jokes of The Big Bang Theory
There were many who just didn’t understand the need for this joke
Some were really angry with the dig taken at Indian cricketers
Another user tweeted if the actors even watched the India New Zealand series
And there were also some who found the outrage unnecessary
In India, Bollywood and Cricket are regarded as the two things that Indians are extremely passionate about. The makers of The Big Bang Theory should have known that taking a jibe at cricket or cricketers will surely invite a lot of reactions from their fans. At the same time, one must remember that freedom of expression is equally important. Whatever be the case, we are sure that this would not make a dent in the huge fanbase that the show has in India. Bazinga!
