Rosogulla, that mouth-watering delectable sweet had been at the center of a bitter tug-of-war between West Bengal and Odisha for over two-and-a-half-years. Fortunately for the sweet as well as for all its lovers West Bengal won the legal battle and was granted the GI or the Geographical Indication status for the sweet. One of the most popular and signature sweets of India was judged to have been originated in West Bengal and not Odisha. As reported by Hindustan Times, Sanjay Bhattacharya, deputy controller of patents and designs in Kolkata, said, “It has been settled under the GI Act that authenticates a product relating to either a geographical location or community or society.” Twitterati could not help but send out sweet tweets about the dessert and the ruling.
The fight had started in 2015 when Odisha decided to set up committees to counter West Bengal’s claims on the sweets. Mamata Bannerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal took to Twitter to share her happiness over the news. She wrote, “Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI (Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla.” Her tweet was quickly lapped up by the Twitter users and it soon became viral.
