Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel known as ‘Iron Man of India’ was born on October 31, 1875, in Gujarat. One of the most influential personalities in India history of independence, he was a lawyer, political activist and played an important role in the Indian Independence Movement. The first Home Minister of Independent India played a crucial role in the integration of over 500 princely states into the Indian Union. He died on December 15, 1950, in Bombay after suffering from heart attack. Today, on his death anniversary, Twitter is pouring in with tributes to the later leader. He worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi and was deeply influenced by his ideology.

Born in in a farmer’s family, Pately lived a simple life and till date is known for his contributions to India during the fight against British. Vallabhbhai’s birth anniversary is observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day. He started his academic career in a Gujarati medium school and later shifted to an English medium school. He went to England in 1910 to pursue law and completed the degree from Inns of Court in 1913. He returned to India to practise law in Godhra, Gujarat. The British Government had offered him many posts to serve them, but he rejected all. Here are some of the Twitter reactions:

During the time of plague, Patel left his job and joined the movement to fight for exemption of taxes in Kheda. He also joined Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement recruited 3,00,000 members by travelling around India. He also worked against alcohol consumption, untouchability, caste discrimination and other social issues.
Patel was asked to lead the Satyagraha movement in Nagpur in 1923 against the British law banning the hoisting of the Indian Flag when Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned. In 1991, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1991.
