The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are underway and are being followed closely by sports enthusiasts across the world. Winter Olympics is a major international sporting event held once every four years, for sports practised on snow and ice. This year, it is being held at PyeongChang in South Korea. While the mesmerizing performances of the athletes in the picturesque white backgrounds are impressive enough, there is yet another thing that is grabbing the attention of tourists in South Korea. And that is South Korea’s Haesindang Park, or the Penis Park! Well yes, athletes and sports fans have been flocking to Haesindang Park, which features several phallic monuments made of wood, stone and plastic, reports the Daily Star.

The park is a tribute to fertility, born from a legend about a virgin and fish and has been attracting curious crowds who have come for the Winter Olympics. Reuters reports that the park comprises penis totem poles, penis benches, penis wind chimes and even a penis-shaped cannon, with a warning to tourists that it should not be mounted. The park also boasts a bright red lighthouse – yet again shaped like a penis and a man’s face with a willy for a tongue. The Haeshindang Park is just about an hour away from the Pyeongchang Olympics. “I’ve been all over the world and I’ve never seen anything like this,” says Keith Childs, a Londoner working at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

The story behind the park is that a fisherman’s wife was left on a rock and drowned. She died a virgin, which then meant no fish could be caught by villagers, until the fisherman ejaculated into the water. This brought the fish back. After this, the villagers erected a phallic shrine to satisfy the dead girl’s spirit. While some of the penis statues in this park have faces on them, most are exact replicas of the human penis. The park also has a cliff top inside the park which has a Chinese zodiac of sculptures in an arch. Here, each animal is carved inside of life-size penises. Interestingly, South Korea, which has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world, has many such Penis Parks in the country.
