1. Mere Desh Ki Dharti – Upkar

This is the all-time favourite song coming from the Bollywood stable. Sung by Mahendra Kapoor for actor Manoj Kumar, it is one of the first songs to be played at flag-hoisting ceremonies.

2. Nanha Munna Rahi Hoon – Son of India

Everyone remembers this song of a little boy scout singing of being his motherland’s soldier and bringing about modernisation, with wonderful visuals of the country. Cute and also igniting the right patriotic spirit among the children.

3. Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Kaa – Naya Daur

This lovely song from Naya Daur has thespians Dilip Kumar and Ajit singing. The playback was by Mohammed Rafi and Balbeer and the music and lyrics were by O P Nayyar and Sahir Ludhianvi.

4. Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein – Hum Hindustani

This Sunil Dutt song was about a post-Independence India looking for a change in the country, trying to get over the British colonial rule and adjusting to the modern post-World War II scenario.

5. Ae Mere Pyare Watan – Kabuliwala

This soothing number from Kabuliwala is a Manna Dey all-time great, a song he rendered for the great actor Balraj Sahni.

6. Rang De Basanti Chola – Shaheed

Another Manoj Kumar classic from his film Shaheed. The song inspired modern versions in movies like The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Rang De Basanti.

7. Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon – Lata Mangeskar, Kavi Pradeep, C Ramachandra

The song brought tears to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s eyes when Lata Mangeshkar rendered it after the Indo-China war, written by the famous Kavi Pradeep and scored by C Ramachandra, Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo is not a film song. And yet it remains an all-time favourite.
