A hospital in the United States has been caught dumping an ill patient in the middle of the night on a roadside in freezing cold. The act which is known as “patient dumping” is done to patients who cannot pay their bills. The security staff of University of Maryland Medical Centre in Baltimore were recorded dumping a patient near the bus stop. The woman who was just in her hospital gown was left alone in -1 degree Celsius. The incident gained attention after a Facebook user Imamu Baraka, a ‘Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA) student’ posted videos on the women helplessly wandering the streets. The woman who is visibly sick also seems to have a speech impairment. The video shows security staff of the hospital bringing her to the road and leaving her for her own good. The Facebook post has gone viral after it was posted on Wednesday, with over 18,000 likes and more than 52,000 shares.
Explaining the sorrowful incident, Imamu Barak in his Facebook post writes, “I just witnessed this with my own eyes. I had no choice but to give this young lady a voice in this moment. University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (UMMC) as a Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA) student — may I remind you of the importance of the VISION of your MEDICAL CENTER: “UMMC will be known for providing high value and compassionate care, improving health in Maryland and beyond, educating future health care leaders and discovering innovative ways to advance medicine worldwide.” You can do better. You must do better.” The video enraged netizens who commented about the inhuman behaviour many hospitals meet out to its patients.

In the video, Baraka is heard asking the hospital guard, “Y’all are just going to leave this lady out here with no clothes?” A guard responds to it saying, “Due to the circumstances of what happened.” He also adds saying that the temperature was roughly 30 degrees outside. The incident which is called ‘patient dumping’ is done to patients who are mentally ill and are not insured or can take care of their bills. However, it is not sure if that was the case in this incident. Following the shameful incident, The University of Maryland Medical System said it has opened an investigation into the incident. They also added that they understand the ‘shock and disappointment’ many have felt after watching the video.
