Many do not know that YouTube which was created by former employees of PayPal and now owned by Google was activated on Valentine’s day i.e. February 14 in 2005. Yes, you read it right. YouTube, which is one of the most visited sites was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim while they were working for online payment company PayPal. YouTube’s initial office was above a Pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo in California, America. The domain of the site was activated on February 14th, 2005 but the video uploading feature was started off on April 23 in the same year. YouTube which was started as just seeing and sharing videos soon exploded as a worldwide phenomenon.

YouTube which was well funded by investors soon rose as one of fastest growing sites within a span of the year. In November 2005, famous venture capital company called Sequoia Capital invest with 3.5 million dollars. Later in the year 2006, YouTube ventured into marketing and ad partnership with NBC and in November Google purchased YouTube for USD 1.65 in stock. In the same year, it was featured as ‘person of the year’ in Time’ magazine as well. This is not all the video sharing giant was also listed at the ninth-best product of 2006 by PC world.

The first ever video uploaded on YouTube was of the co-founder of Karim. The video was titled as “Me at the zoo” and Karim uploaded the same on April 23, 2005. The video was shot at the San Diego Zoo and can be still viewed on the website. YouTube currently now boasts 1 billion users and gets over 30 million visitors per day.
