Gudi Padwa is a Hindu New Year which will be celebrated on March 28, 2017. This festival is celebrated by the Maharashtrians on the first day of the Chaitra month according to the lunar calendar. Gudi Padwa was first celebrated by great veteran Maratha leader, Shivaji Maharaja who celebrated his victory all across the world which is also known as ‘Vijay Dhwaj’. On the day of Gudi Padwa, people worship and decorate the Gudi with red or yellow cloth and host it at a height which symbolises victory in an army. The Gudi must then be covered with an inverted copper or silver utensil. There are various mythological stories related to celebration of Gudi Padwa festival, and it is said that Lord Brahma created the universe on this auspicious day and Satyayug began. On the special occasion, people take the auspicious bath and even decorate the doorway with neem leaves which is also known as toran and even perform ritualistic worship. The Gudi is worshipped during sunrise and should be worshipped within five to ten minutes after sunrise. Devotees even worship Lord Surya, and chant Maha mantra’s to seek Lord’s divine and powerful blessings. ‘O Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu! Please enable me to absorb the Principle of Creation and the Fire Principle present in the atmosphere. Let the Divine consciousness present in these principles be constantly preserved. Let the energy thus received, be used for my spiritual practice.’ Gudi Padwa is also known as Ugadi in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
