The world’s only albino orangutan will be moving to a man-made forest island home by end of June. The female orangutan who was rescued from a village in Borneo last year cannot return to wild because of her health issues related to albinism. Her issues make her more vulnerable to hunters as well. Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, who named her Alba, which means white in Latin said that her health issue includes poor sight and hearing and she may even get skin cancer later in life. To make sure she is safe, the conservation group will move her into ten-hectare special forest area near the group’s orangutan rehabilitation center.

The forest area is in central Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. ‘Soon, Alba will be moved to a special man-made island that encompasses 10 hectares of natural habitat, so she can live a life of freedom while remaining protected from human threats,’ the group said in a statement. Apart from Alba other three orangutans named Radmala, Kika and Unyu will also shift to the new habitat.  Alba has bonded with these three since the day she was rescued and brought to the center.

Staff will also patrol around to ensure that they are safe. Her name was chosen in the month of May last year after thousands of suggestions. Last year the group also started an appeal to raise money in order to buy land for the reserve. Orangutans, who are critically endangered are now only found in the Indonesian island of Sumatra and on Borneo. What are your views on the same? Let us know in the comments below.
