New Delhi, April 14: A 21-year-old student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room. The incident occurred on Friday morning. The deceased identified as Gopal Maloo was pursuing Masters of Science (Chemistry) and was in his first year.

He was a resident of Hoogli in West Bengal and lived in the Nilgiri boys hostel in Delhi. However, the reason for suicide is yet to be ascertained.

According to reports, police recovered a suicide note from his room and it indicates that he was suffering from depression over being sexually abused since his childhood. He has also mentioned some names in Bengali in his suicide letter. Police have sent suicide letter for forensic analysis.

Students also claimed that Maloo was depressed and he used to stay in his room. He didn’t interact with other students much.

Meanwhile, Maloo’s parents informed police that he never complained about being sexually abused and there was no sign of depression. He had joined IIT-Delhi two months back.

As per information, the deceased had attempted suicide earlier on April 10 by consuming sleeping pills but failed. He was then admitted to Safdarjung hospital and was later discharged. After this attempt, his brother, Bachoo Ram, stayed with him and counseled him.

Recently in April, a student of IIT- a 21-year-old allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence. Her family said she was under pressure and was undergoing treatment for depression at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. The deceased was preparing for her third-semester examinations.
