Chandigarh, April 4: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has improved its rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by bagging the 33rd position this year. The results of the NIRF 2018 were released by Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi on Tuesday. PU was in the 54th position last year among other elite Indian institutes which applied for the rankings.

The other universities that made it to top 100 in the overall rankings list are Thapar University at 50th; Indian Institute of Science Education and Research at 55th; Panjab Agriculture University at 60th; Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University 76th; and Guru Nanak Dev University 86th. Among the universities, PU ranked at 20th position with the PU pharmacy department bagging the third position among pharmacy department from all over India. Not just this, PU’s management course bagged the 42nd position in the NIRF 2018.

This year’s NIRF rankings used several parameters for adjudging the institutes and universities. Different rankings were the result of the use of a different database, parameter and methodology, said a PU official. Among the various parameters used, perception parameter was one of the most important ones as it gave the perception of the institution by its stakeholders.

Another parameter, that is, the outreach parameter focused on women, socially challenged people which included students, teachers and their representation. It also laid emphasis on the outreach of the institute. The effectiveness of the core teaching, learning activity, student’s graduation rate, placement in the industry and the rate of taking up of higher studies by the students came under the graduations outcomes parameter.

Meanwhile, the research and professional practice parameter measured the quantity and quality of research output as per international base standards, IPR generation and interfacing with the industry and fellow professionals. This is what the students were adjudged with. However, the faculty was measured by the teaching, learning and resources parameters which laid prominence on the quality and quantity of teachers.  Library and lab resources and general facilities for the development of young persons were also measured under this category.

PU got a total of 52.59 marks out of 100 in the teaching and learning resource parameter while in research and professional career they bagged 44.75 out of 100. In graduation outcome, they received 73.16 out of 100 and in outreach, PU got 47.52 while the score in perception was 23.58 out of 100.
