Jaipur, August 12: The Rajasthan Universities will not observe a holiday on October 2- Gandhi Jayanti. The office of Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh has released a new holiday calendar for all state universities for the year 2017-2018, listing 24 holidays for the academic year 2017-18. As per the new holiday calendar, the state universities will only get holidays on Moharram and Diwali in the month of October.

Except for these two days, students will get holidays on the birth anniversaries of Ramdev (folk deity of Rajasthan), Guru Nanak, BR Ambedkar, Lord Mahavira and Maharana Pratap. Some universities have accepted the new calendar while the rest are yet to take a decision on it. The calendar was issued to 12 state universities.

On October 2 not being declared as holiday, a spokesperson of Raj Bhawan told HT that it has not been declared in the higher education department of state government. “Raj Bhawan has issued the holiday calendar for the universities according to the gazetted holiday calendar issued by the state government,” he added.On this, Kiran Maheshwari, the Higher education minister stated that all schools, universities on October 2 celebrate Gandhi Jayanti and that is why it is not declared as holiday.

N Radhakrishnan has been leading a movement to not observe on birth and death anniversary of Gandhi. Radhakrishnan is the chairman of Indian Council for Gandhian Studies.
