Lok Sabha Elections 2014: Shazia Ilmi, Soni Sori in AAP’s sixth candidates list

New Delhi, March 15: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Saturday declared its sixth list of 55 candidates for Lok Sabha polls including prominent party leader Shazia Ilmi, alleged Maoist conduit Soni Sori and ex-IPS officer officer Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya.

Ilmi will contest from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, while Sori has been fielded from Bastar in Chhattisgarh. Sori and her nephew Lingaram Kodopi, a budding journalist who had ambitions of empowering the poor tribals, were accused of receiving money from a corporate house to transfer to Maoists, a charge they denied. Kodopi was arrested in September 2011 and Sori a month later.

She spent over two years in jails in Raipur and Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh and then in Delhi’s Tihar jail. Bhattacharya, the second woman Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and the first woman to become a state police chief (director general of police), will contest from Haridwar in Uttarakhand.

The AAP, which plans to contest between 350 to 400 Lok Sabha seats, has so far declared 242 candidates. The latest list also includes 10 candidates each from Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, seven from Madhya Pradesh, and six from Maharashtra.
