Come April 14 and the Punjabi New Year will be celebrated with much grandeur. Baisakhi also called as Vaisakhi, is the first day of Vaisakh, that is, the first solar month of the Punjabi calendar which incidentally marks the birth of Khalsa (also celebrated as Khalsa Sirjana Divas). Baisakhi is mainly referred to as the harvest festival of the Punjab region and you’d be surprised to know that it is one of the three festivals that was chosen by Guru Amar Das to be celebrated by Sikhs.

It is the day when farmers pay tribute to the almighty for their abundant harvest and pray for prosperity. They celebrate it as Aawat Pauni where farmers and workers gather at the end of the day and sing religious couplets to the tune of drums.

On the eve of Baisakhi, we bring to you 5 events which mark the celebrations of the Punjabi New Year.

Film ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’ to be released sans Punjab as per SC’s order:

The film which is based on the life and teachings of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev was opposed but later got the approval of Supreme Court and would hence be released on Baisakhi. And we believe the timing couldn’t have been any better.

A ban had been called for the film by the Sikh Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht who believe that “no person must portray the Sikh Guru and his family members and that as such portrayals hurt the sentiments of the community.”
