The festival of Karwa Chauth is just around the corner and married women are all geared up to ring in the festival with traditional attire, cosmetics, jewelry, and mehndi. This year Karwa Chauth is being celebrated on Sunday, October 8, 2017. Karwa Chauth is a very popular festival in India and is celebrated by married women from the northwestern part of India in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. The one-day festival sees women fast for the wellbeing and longevity of their husband’s life from sunrise to moonrise and breaks the fast only after looking at the moon in the evening. The festival is celebrated on the fourth day after the full moon and that is a reason for the explanation of part of its name. The ‘chauth’ part comes from this reasoning as the festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon or purnima in the Hindu month of Ashwin, whereas the ‘karwa’ means an earthen pot. Women deck themselves up as a new bride on this day and putting henna or mehndi on their hands is a must for them to signify their marital status.

The artists who put mehndi are in heavy demand and charge exorbitant prices for decking up your hands during Karwa Chauth.
