Italy and Uruguay have played each other nine times. Their head-to-head record: two wins for Italy, three for Uruguay and four draws.

Four of their matches were competitive. At the 1928 Olympics Uruguay defeated Italy. At the World Cup, Italy have won once, the other match ending in a draw (0-0 in 1970). At the 2013 Confederations Cup they met in the match for third place. After 120 minutes the score was 2-2. Italy won the penalty shootout (3-2).

Uruguay’s victory over England last 19 June marked their first against a European team (UEFA affiliated) at the World Cup in 44 years, following their victory against Soviet Union at the 1970 World Cup. They had gone 15 straight World Cup matches without a victory against European opposition after that triumph.

Uruguay have not beaten European opponents in back-to-back World Cup matches since 1954.

Italy are unbeaten in their last 10 World Cup matches facing CONMEBOL teams (W4 D6 L0). They have not been defeated by South American opponents at the World Cup since their 1-0 loss against Brazil in 1978.
