Belgium vs Algeria, Group H, FIFA World Cup 2014

Belgium: Belgium’s golden generation has evolved to get them to the finals of the 2014 world cup. It will be interesting to watch the Belgium players who ply their trade in some of the best clubs of the world week in week out play at a major tournament. Placed in a relatively easy group consisting Algeria, South Korea and Russia, they must be planning for a longer stay in the Samba nation.

Algeria: They are expected to bow out of the tournament without a point but for Algerians the 2014 world cup is a tournament of hope and pride. At the 2010 event, they held   a poor England side to a draw so they just might look to play spoilers for other team. They have a reputation of lacklustre performances at major finals after constant qualifications to these tournaments.

Total Matches Played: 2

Belgium 1 Win, Algeria 0 Win, 1 Draw

(169 Mins)

The ball goes out for a corner and Belgium will just tap it short and try to run down the clock. Algeria do mange to force the ball down the other end however and they load up the box for one last long throw, but it wont fall for Slimani and Belgium can clear.

(168 Mins)

Today could well be the last we see of Nacer Chadli for a little while this summer. He was dreadful before his half-time removal and there seems to be little chance of him starting ahead of Mirallas or Fellaini next time out.

(167 Mins)

Mertens celebrates his all-important goal.

(166 Mins)

After holding out for so long the Algerians dont seem to have a lot left to give. Theyve been gifted an additional three minutes with which to upset the apple-cart.

(164 Mins)

Marc Wilmots will be delighted with the impact his substitutes have had here. Origi may have missed his big chance but Mertens invention down the right has been rewarded with a well taken goal, while the introduction of Felliani completely changed the game. Whether the same tactic will be quite so effective further down the line remains to be seen, but for now Belgium can enjoy this impressive turnaround.

(164 Mins)

Dries Mertens fires Belgium in front.

(161 Mins)

SUBSTITUTION - And thisll be the last throw of the dice for Algeria. On comes Nabil Ghilas for Karl Medjani.

(159 Mins)

Say what you like about Fellainis ability as a central-midfielder, the former Everton man can certainly win a header. He has come so close to doubling his sides advantage here with with a flex of his powerful neck muscles. This time, however, MBohli is equal to it.

(157 Mins)

After all that toothless probing and passing from Belgium theyve turned this one around via a simple headed goal and a lightning counter-attack. The previously resolute Algerian defence was suddenly caught out there as Hazard gathered up the ball and ran directly at the back-pedalling defenders. He waited, waited and waited before sliding the ball exquisitely through for Mertens to smash home and send the Belgium fans wild.

(156 Mins)

GOAL - Belgium 2-1 Algeria. Heartbreak for Algeria as Dries Mertens streaks through to finish with aplomb past MBohli.

(154 Mins)

The urgency that Belgium were showing just before their equaliser has al but evaporated here. A point will still be an excellent result for Algeria and it looks to be a case of "weve done the long ball towards Fellaini thing, now what?" from Belgium.

(153 Mins)

MBohli is unable to prevent Fellainis header from flying past him.

(150 Mins)

As nice as it will feel for Belgium to grab that equaliser, however this game finishes I think we can all agree that this side are still some way off the leading lights in the tournament. They may have a star-studded squad full of household names but there has been no cohesion about Belgiums play here today and a better team than Algeria - of which the tournament features many - will be far better equipped to deal with a 60th minute introduction of Marouane Fellaini.

(149 Mins)

Marouane Fellaini celebrates his equaliser.

(147 Mins)

It really is an excellent header from Fellaini who has proved himself so adept at using that impressive afro of his to knock balls into the net. Its de Bruyne who whips the ball in for the substitute to loop the ball expertly over MBohli in the Algerian net. Youd have to fancy the Belgians to go on and find a winner here.

(146 Mins)

GOAL - Belgium 1-1 Algeria. Well, say what you like about route one football, it has worked for Belgium as Fellaini heads them level.

(144 Mins)

SUBSTITUTION - Algeria have made their first change of the game with Algerian Player of the Year Islam Slimani being introduced.

(142 Mins)

Thats the best chance of the game for Belgium. After an hour of ponderous passing in front of the Algerian defence suddenly Origi finds himself bearing down on goal. The 19-year-old can only fire his shot straight at MBohlli however and the danger is gone. Penny for Lukakus thoughts?

(141 Mins)

SUBSTITUTION - Its Demebele who makes way for Fellaini. Is this a sign that were going to see an aerial bombardment from Belgium now? If so it seems a little unimaginative considering the creative talent Wilmots has at his disposal, but there you go.

(140 Mins)

Marouane Fellaini is being readied to enter the fray.

(140 Mins)

Hazard has struggled to make an impact today.

(138 Mins)

Belgium are getting more and more frustrated as Algeria take every opportunity to run down the clock. They are still defending resolutely and Wilmots side look completely void of ideas of how to break them down.

(136 Mins)

Origi is an even younger and more inexperienced option than Lukaku and will be something of an unknown quantity to this Algerian defence - perhaps that counts for something? He has spent the last two seasons on the fringes of the Lille team, scoring just two goals in the process. Nows the time to shine, son.

(134 Mins)

SUBSTITUTION - Well this is a bit of a surprise. Young stiker Divock Origi is stripped and ready on the touchline and as the board goes up we can see he is going to be replacing Romelu Lukaku. Bold move from Wilmots, but one which could come back to haunt him if his side come away from Bello Horizonte empty handed.

(133 Mins)

A glancing header from Medjani flies just wide of the Belgium goal after the midfielder gets up highest from a corner. Its a timely reminder for Belgium of the threat that Algeria still pose.

(130 Mins)

Belgium win a free-kick over on the right-hand-side which is whipped in with pace by Mertens. MBohli does connect with his punch this time though and Algeria can clear. In other news there was a plastic bag on the pitch.

(127 Mins)

Mertens manages to sneak in round the back of the Algeria defence but he just runs out of room before he can squeeze in a cross. Its been a bright start by the Belgians.

(126 Mins)

Thats a good chance for Belgium. The corner is floated i and MBohli comes rushing out without making convincing contact with the ball. It falls to the head of Witsel but he doesnt have time to react to the goalkeepers incompetence and can only direct his header over the bar.

(125 Mins)

Mertens has taken up a position on the right with de Bruyne moving into the centre. Algeria are already beginning to take their time over every slight break in play. It could be a frustrating half for Belgium.

(122 Mins)

And the second half is underway. Can the introduction of Mertens spark a listless Belgium into life?

(121 Mins)

SUBSTITUTION - Were going to have a half-time chance and as suggested it is Chadli who makes way for Napolis Dries Mertens.

(120 Mins)

Nabil Bentaleb is shown the yellow card following a retaliatory foul on Moussa Dembele.

(112 Mins)

Marc Wilmots looks on as his side struggle to overcome a 1-0 deficit.

(106 Mins)

HALF-TIME - As the whistle goes the scoreline still shows the Algerians holding a shock 1-0 lead against their much more celebrated opponents. Vahid Halilhodzic has clearly drilled his side well and for 44 minutes they barely allowed their opponents a sniff while grabbing that crucial goal through Feghoulis penalty. Belgium began to create a few more chances towards the end of the half but have been, on the whole, disappointing and way too quick to resort to shooting from distance when faced with a stubborn Algerian defence. Fortunately for Marc Wilmots he has plenty of talent on his bench in Fellaini, Mirallas, Mertens and Januzaj who could all come on and change the game. Perhaps in place of the disappointing Chadli.

(104 Mins)

Thats a bit more like it. Hazard manages to get on the ball twice in dangerous areas , first playing the ball through to Chadli who shoots straight at MBohli and then escaping down the left and fizzing a wicked ball across the six-yard-box which eludes everyone and goes out for a throw. Much better from Belgium.

(102 Mins)

Well thats just ridiculous from Chadli. The midfielder has never really showed any particular aptitude for 40-yard screamers but that is exactly what he goes for here. Unsurprisingly the shot is tame and MBohil can watch it roll past the post. Belgium really need to show a little more invention here. They have a squad blessed with plenty of clever playmakers who really arent proving their worth today.

(100 Mins)

Kompany doesnt look too happy with Vertonghen in the aftermath of the penalty decision.

(99 Mins)

And it is the defender who hits it, unfortunately he cant keep his shot down and the ball sails harmlessly over the bar.

(98 Mins)

Belgium have won a free-kick in a dangerous area. de Bruyne and Vertonghen stand over the ball with the latter presumably desperate to atone for his earlier error.

(97 Mins)

YELLOW CARD - Bentaleb picks up the yellow for a foul on his club teammate Dembele. Its the second card of the game - Vertonghen was cautioned for the foul on Feghouli which led to the penalty.

(94 Mins)

Its another decent hit from Axel Witsel. The ball sits up nicely for the Zenit man and he lashes his shot towards goal and MBoli has to deal with it. The ball falls to Chadli from the resulting corner and he too tries his luck from range, but his shot is weak and is easily gathered up by the goalkeeper. The Algerians will be pretty pleased to see their opponents resorting to pot-shots from range at this stage.

(92 Mins)

An enterprising run from de Bruyne yields a corner for Belgium but the ball in is over hit and Algeria can regain possession.

(92 Mins)

Algeria celebrate the opening goal.

(89 Mins)

Algerias game-plan is working perfectly here. Theyve got their goal without having to commit too many men forward and are succeeding in frustrating Wilmots side by denying them space and stopping any momentum with well timed fouls.

(87 Mins)

And in response? Another long-range effort from Belgium. This time its Dembeles eyes which light up but his shot dribbles well wide of MBohlis right hand post.

(85 Mins)

That was some really poor defending from Vertonghen. The ball was whipped in from the left and the Tottenham defender needlessly dragged back his man after finding himself the wrong side of Feghouli.

(84 Mins)

GOAL Belgium 0-1 Algeria - Well who saw this coming? Algeria have taken the lead after 25 minutes through Sofiane Feghouli who converts the penalty with ease.

(83 Mins)

PENALTY! Vertonghen is penalised for knocking down the Algerian attacker in the box!

(82 Mins)

The Belgians are going to have to be patient here. So far theyve been restricted to long range efforts and not a whole lot else by a determined Algerian side. This time the ball finds its way to Chadli on the edge of the box but the ball is taken off his toes before he can turn towards goal.

(78 Mins)

Good effort from Witsel. He finds a couple of yards of space just outside the Algerian box and cracks a shot towards goal which is parried by MBolhi.

(73 Mins)

Belgium will be without Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke this season after he sufered an achilles injury back in April. While most teams could only dream of brining in a striker with the quality of Lukaku to lead their line there has been the suggestion that Benteke was much more suited to the lone forward role in Marc Wilmots side. For all his ability Lukaku is still raw at times and perhaps isnt quite the natural hold up player Benteke is. Its a big tournament for the 21-year-old whose future looks far from certain after he spent last season on loan at Everton.

(71 Mins)

Every time Hazard gets near the ball he is being surrounded by three or four Algerian player who are evidently determined to extend the Chelsea mans poor international form. He has been robbed of the ball on a couple of occasions over on the left-hand-side before he has the chance to stretch his legs and or pick a pass.

(70 Mins)

Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku challenges Madjid Bougherra for the ball.

(67 Mins)

The Algerians look pretty content to sit back and soak up the Belgian pressure before springing counter-attacks of their own. Theyve lined-up with Carl Medjani, a centre-back by trade, patrolling the area in front of the back four who will be tasked with keeping an eye on Belgiums talented triumvirate of attacking midfielders.

(64 Mins)

Algeria seeing plenty of the ball in the opening stages. Theyve managed to float a couple of balls into the box but its meat and drink for Vincent Kompany who can head these kind of balls away all day long.

(63 Mins)

Can The Red Devils come out on top today?

(61 Mins)

It looks like Chadli will be tasked with providing support behind Lukaku in attack. The Tottenham man struggled to really make an impact in his debut season in the Premier League but has been given an important role ahead of plenty of other viable candidates by Marc Wilmots.

(60 Mins)

And were off. Algeria get things started, kicking from right to left.

(57 Mins)

The anthems are done, the handshakes are done and Algeria have been awarded the much coveted Tightest Shirts Award. Were all ready to go.

(54 Mins)

Another name to keep an eye on is teenager Adnan Januzaj who starts on the Belgium bench today. Januzaj made quite the impact when called upon for a struggling Manchester United side this season and has today been linked with a £33m move to Real Madrid. Expect the youngsters value to increase even further if he can impress in Brazil.

(54 Mins)

Algerian fans await the kick-off of their opening World Cup game.

(50 Mins)

Eden Hazard might just be the most high-profile name in the Belgium line-up but it has been Kevin de Bruyne who emerged as their key player in qualifying, taking on much of the creative and goalscoring burden. Hazard has struggled to replicate his club form at times for the national side while the less-heralded de Bruyne top scored in qualifying. Will he merge as the key man today or can Hazard finally deliver on the international stage?

(49 Mins)

Belgium fans prepare for their clash against Algeria.

(44 Mins)

Algeria meanwhile are amongst the least fancied sides in the entire tournament and are the massive underdogs here today. They have one or two recognisable faces in Tottenhams Nabil Bentaleb and Sofiane Feghouli of Valencia who will be hoping to spring a surprise on the talented Belgiums.

(41 Mins)

There is great expectation on the shoulders of this Belgium side. They have arrived at the tournament with a genuine golden generation of players, from Thibaut Courtois between the sticks through to Romelu Lukaku who will spearhead their attack today. The only glaring weakness in the side is their lack of natural full-backs which means we will see centre-backs Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld down the sides of the Belgium defence.

(37 Mins)

A few surprises in that Belgium line-up. Daniel van Buyten starts ahead of Thomas Vermaelen at centre-back while Tottenhams Nacer Chadli is selected in place of Kevin Mirallas. Marouane Fellaini will also start from the bench with Moussa Dembele lining up alongside Axel Witsel in the centre of midfield.

(35 Mins)

Algeria (4-3-3): MBohli; Ghoulam, Medjani, Halliche, Bougherra; Taider, Mostefa, Bentaleb; Mahrez, Soudani, Feghouli.

(33 Mins)

Belgium (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Vertonghen, van Buyten, Kompany, Alderweireld; Dembele, Witsel; Hazard, de Bruyne, Chadli; Lukaku.
