Argentina Vs Nigeria, Group F - Live Score

Nigeria Argentina

Nigeria vs Argentina, Group F, FIFA World Cup 2014

Nigeria: The Golden Eagles are in red hot form and come into the tournament at the back of an African Nations cup win last year. Stephen Keshis men will love to put up a strong showing in Brazil to erase the memories of a disastrous world cup showing in South Africa. With players like Jon Obi Mikel and Emmanuel Emenike in good form, a place in the knock out stage looks realistic.

Argentina: Argentina come into the tournament with a very balanced squad and should breeze through the group stage. Lionel Messi will look to add to his World Cup tally of a solitary goal. On paper, they have one of the best sides in the tournament and the team is peaking at the right time. Argentina is one of the pre-tournament favourites and with players like Angel Di Maria, Javier Mascherano, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain we won’t doubt the football pundits.

Total Matches Played: 6

Nigeria 1 Win, Argentina 4 Wins, 1 Draw

(170 Mins)

Higuain is going to be the man replaced by Biglia for the last few minutes. Its not really been Higuains day, or his tournament so far. Hes got into some nice areas and but not really looked his usual, clinical self in front of goal. Perhaps its simply that he has been overshadowed by his captain today.

(169 Mins)

Mascherano cracks a shot on goal from outside the area and its saved by the goalkeeper. It would have been a real shock to see the goal-shy Argentine score from there.

(168 Mins)

Lazios Lucas Biglia is being readied to come on for Argentina.

(167 Mins)

Ambrose sells Rojo a dummy over on the right breaks into the box. He lashes his shot towards goal but it deflects of Fernandez and just wide of the post. The corner comes in to the feet of Yobo but he cant bring it under control and Argentina get it away.

(166 Mins)

Sabella urges his side on from the touchline.

(164 Mins)

Di Maria sprints clear of the Nigerian backline but he shoots straight at Enyeama from a slight angle.

(163 Mins)

Theres been two goals in quick succession over in the Bosnia Iran game. Iran pull one back before Bosnia restore their two goal lead. its still 3-1 and both those sides are heading home.

(162 Mins)

Messi hands over the armband to his Barcelona teammate Mascherano.

(161 Mins)

Argentina struggle to clear a short corner from Nigeria but when the ball comes out to Onazi he hits an off-balance volley and its safely behind.

(160 Mins)

Enyeama catches the ball ahead of Higuain.

(159 Mins)

Uche Nwofor is going to come on for Odemwingie for the last ten minutes.

(158 Mins)

Up the other end Musa almost crowns his game with a third goal. The ball goes in behind Zabaleta who is almost turned inside out by Musa only to put in a fantastic recovering tackle just as the forward prepared to pull the trigger.

(156 Mins)

Alvarez is hacked down and wins a freee-kick which is chipped into the box for Lavezzi. He hits the ball first time but Enyeama gets down well to save. It was an inventive free-kick from Di Maria who had clearly worked on that one on the training ground.

(155 Mins)

Nigerian substitute Michael Uchebo is being played in a number ten role here. It seems a little odd as a tactical decision given that the 24 year old is 6 ft 5 and a real presence in the air.

(153 Mins)

Odemwingies cross deflects of Rojo and behind for a corner. The Stoke attacker takes the set-piece himself but he cant beat the first man. The ball comes back to Nigeria though and they work a cross towards Musa who powers a first-time volley over the bar. That would have been some way to complete his hat-trick.

(151 Mins)

John Obi Mikel almost threatens to dance through the Argentina back-line in very un-John Obi Mikel-like fashion. Hes dumped on the floor by Mascherano though and the referee waves play on.

(150 Mins)

Enyeama watches the ball deflect into his net.

(148 Mins)

Its going to be Alvarez to take Argentinas tenth corner of the game. He plays it short to Lavezzi but its very casual from Argentina and they lose possession.

(147 Mins)

The thrust has really gone out of this one thanks to those couple of stoppages and injuries. Both teams are safely through as things stand and Nigeria look quite content with second place.

(146 Mins)

Argentina celebrate their third goal.

(143 Mins)

Michael Babatunde has spent the last few minutes down in some pain. The stretcher is being brought on for the midfielder who looks to have a real problem with his arm which has now been bandaged up. Michael Uchebo is going to be his replacement.

(142 Mins)

Theres going to be no hat-trick for Lionel Messi today. The captain hands over his armband to Mascherano as he leaves the field to thunderous applause. Its been a brilliant performance from the little magician today who has scored two excellent goals and laid on countless other opportunities for his teammates. Inter Milans Ricky Alvarez trots on to replace him.

(141 Mins)

The corner is cleared unconvincingly by Argentina and the ball falls to the feet of Mikel in a dangerous position. His shot it weak though when he really should have done better.

(140 Mins)

Oshaniwa finds a yard of space on the right and delivers a cross. No Nigerian attacker can get their head on it though and the ball is cleared behind for a corner.

(138 Mins)

Theres been another goal in Group Fs other game and its good news for Nigeria. Iran have fallen two goals behind to Bosnia and will now be heading home barring a miraculous comeback. Still all to play for here though with the winners of this game likely to avoid France in the next round.

(137 Mins)

Argentina win a corner which is taken by Messi. Its easily dealt with by the Nigerian defence though as Ambrose heads clear.

(137 Mins)

His first ever goal for his country.

(136 Mins)

Rojo turns home Garays flick on.

(135 Mins)

The stadium is absolutely bouncing and Argentina look in the mood. Theyre finally giving their fans an attacking performance to cheer about. Its just a shame about that leaky defence.

(134 Mins)

This has been a magnificent game so far and it shows no signs of letting up. This time its Higuain with the chance after being slipped through by Messi. He just about reaches the ball before Enyeama but the keeper gets down well to save.

(133 Mins)

Enyeama saves from Di Maria.

(132 Mins)

Di Maria whacks a cross across the area which Enyeama beats away. The ball comes out to Lavezzi on the edge of the box but he cant get the bouncing ball under control and Nigeria clear.

(131 Mins)

Musa celebrates his second.

(131 Mins)

That was Rojos first international goal. Hardly a vintage finish but one hell surely remember for quite some time.

(130 Mins)

Argentina 3-2 Nigeria. The corner is whipped in and Garay is first to the ball. The ball glances of his head and onto the knee of Rojo who bundles it home.

(129 Mins)

Messi curls a free-kick into the box and its headed clear by Ambrose. The clearance drops straight to Di Maria though and he drives a shot towards goal from distance which Enyeama turns behind for a corner.

(127 Mins)

The ball is slipped through into a large gap between the two Argentine centre-backs for Musa to run onto and the Nigeria attackers latches onto the pass before slotting the ball past Romero. Can Nigeria grab the goal that would send them through as group winners?

(127 Mins)

Argentina 2-2 Nigeria. Musa has done it again. What a start to the half from Nigeria.

(124 Mins)

No changes to tell you about for this second-half as Nigeria get things underway. Can Nigeria launch another comeback? Will Messi complete his hat-trick? Stay tuned to find out.

(114 Mins)

At half-time in the groups other fixture Bosnia are still leading Iran 1-0. Argentinas goal shouldnt prove too costly for Nigeria unless Iran can find a way back into that game.

(109 Mins)

HALF-TIME. Argentina go into the break with the advantage after Messis strike on the stroke of half-time. Nigeria have defended well at times and scored a cracking goal of their own early on but the Argentines simply have too much quality in players like Di Maria and Messi who can open up any defence without warning and thats exactly what theyve done here in Porto Alegre.

(107 Mins)

The Barcelona star lifts the ball over the wall and into the corner of a helpless Enyeamas net. The shot was so well placed that the goalkeeper didnt even bother diving. After so much success for his club side it looks like Messi is finally stepping up to the challenge for his country and he appears unstoppable today.

(106 Mins)

Argentina 2-1 Nigeria. A sensational free-kick from Messi has given Argentina the lead!

(105 Mins)

Messi almost slaloms his way through the Nigerian defence but hes hacked down and the referee signals for a free-kick around 20 yards from goal.

(105 Mins)

Stephen Keshi urges his team on.

(103 Mins)

Its going to be a free-kick to Argentina which Messi stands over menacingly. He strikes for goal and the ball is almost perfectly placed in the top corner. Enyeama is just able to reach the shot though and he turns it behind for a corner.

(103 Mins)

The midfielder is back on his feet now and Nigeria regain possession.

(102 Mins)

Onazi stretches to tackle Aguero and he looks to be in some discomfort.

(99 Mins)

Argentina win a couple of corners in quick succession. The first is tipped over by Enyeama before the second is headed to safety.

(98 Mins)

The free-kick is finally delivered and Odemwingie almost sneaks around the back of the defence and latches onto the ball. Its slightly ling though and the ball is behind for a goal-kick.

(98 Mins)

Its a real shame for Aguero who has endured an injury hit campaign for his club. The forward has still looked in top form in the league when fit however and could be a big miss for Argentina.

(96 Mins)

Before the free-kick can be taken though Aguero drops to the floor and he is going to have to be replaced. Its unclear what the problem with Aguero is but there was no contact so its presumably muscular. He is going to be replaced by Ezequiel Lavezzi.

(95 Mins)

Emenike is hauled down by Mascherano just outside the penalty area. Its going to be a free-kick to Nigeria from a promising position.

(95 Mins)

Odemwingie challenges Rojo for the ball.

(92 Mins)

Zabaleta gets the space to cross over on the right. He steers the ball towards Higuain and the ball is headed away straight to Aguero. The Manchester City stars shot is straight at the keeper though and he blocks the ball behind for a corner.

(90 Mins)

Enyeama is called into action after Di Maria strikes one towards goal from distance. He tips the ball round the post for a corner which is delivered towards Rojo at the back post. The defender is under pressure from Yobo though and cant direct his header on target.

(89 Mins)

A sharp burst from Messi takes him into the box but he plays the ball to Higuain without looking and the Napoli striker had halted his run. The ball runs out of play.

(87 Mins)

Decent hit from Odemwingie. The Nigeria number eight finds a yard of space around 25 yards from goal and his shot is powerful but always rising and Romero can watch the ball sail harmlessly over his crossbar.

(86 Mins)

Emenike is almost in behind the Argentina defence but the ball is slightly overhit and Garay can shepherd the ball out of play.

(85 Mins)

Emenike controls the ball.

(84 Mins)

Big news for Nigeria in Group Fs other fixture. Bosnia have taken the lead against Iran meaning that it will take two goals from Iran and one from Argentina to put the Super Eagles in danger of crashing out of the tournament.

(82 Mins)

Oshainiwa is down after a challenge from Gago but he looks like he should be able to continue. It was a nasty one though with Gagos knee crashing into the defenders side.

(81 Mins)

A better spell of pressure for Nigeria leads to a shot from distance from Onazi but his effort is charged down and blocked.

(80 Mins)

Argentina have got a free-kick in a dangerous position which is whipped in by Messi. John Obi Mikel is first to the ball and his header is flicked back to the goalkeeper.

(78 Mins)

Nigeria need to try and hold on to possession better here. Theyre doing well to pinch the ball off the Argentines but too often a wayward pass gifts possession straight back to Sabellas men. It means its tricky for the Nigerians to launch attacks of their own and is also making them vulnerable to the rather potent threat of this Argentina front-line.

(77 Mins)

The first corner of the game is earned by Argentina. Rojo and Garay are up from the back but Messis corner is too high and Enyeama can gather.

(75 Mins)

Aguero is found inside the Nigeria box by Messi but he is well wide of goal and can only fire the ball into the arms of Enyeama.

(75 Mins)

Nigeria celebrate their equaliser.

(73 Mins)

Theres been a bit of a lull in proceedings after the opening flurry of action. Argentina are keeping possession well but cant break down Nigeria just yet.

(72 Mins)

Romero is unable to stop Musa pulling Nigeria level.

(71 Mins)

Messi opens the scoring.

(69 Mins)

Messi slips Higuain through on the keeper but Enyeama is alert and comes out to narrow the angle. Higuain is forced wide and is unable to work his finish inside the post as the ball flies into the side netting. Good chance for Argentina.

(68 Mins)

Di Maria hits one from distance but its comfortable for Enyeama who can parry away to safety.

(67 Mins)

Argentina look to hit back through Di Maria but he cant quite squeeze the ball through to Aguero and Nigeria can clear.

(67 Mins)

Messi celebrates the opening goal.

(65 Mins)

What a start to this game. You would have been forgiven or thinking this one was over as a contest after Messi put Argentina in front inside three minutes but Ahmed Musa had other ideas. He gathers up the ball on the left and cuts inside before bending a fine finish beyond the outstretched Romero. Stunning stuff.

(64 Mins)

Argentina 1-1 Nigeria. An absolute stunner from Musa has drawn the Nigerians level!

(63 Mins)

It was a brilliant pass from Mascherano to start off the move. The ball was beautifully weighted for Di Maria who cracked his shot against the post. The ball rebounded off the woodwork and the keeper straight to Messi who made no mistake, lashing the ball into the roof of the net.

(62 Mins)

Argentina 1-0 Nigeria. Well that didnt take him long. Lionel Messi fires Argentina in front after just two minutes.

(61 Mins)

Messi leads out the team.

(60 Mins)

Its Argentina who get us underway kicking from left to right. The atmosphere is electric here with the Albiceleste fans out in force.

(55 Mins)

The teams are out and its time for the national anthems. Argentina are in their traditional sky-blue-and-white striped kits while Nigeria sport their all-green affair.

(53 Mins)

Argentinas fans wait for the emergence of their heroes.

(49 Mins)

A 1-0 win for both Iran and Argentina would see us in the unusual position of two teams being tied on points, goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head. The team to go through would then be decided by drawing lots. Exciting stuff.

(42 Mins)

Argentina, tipped as many peoples favourites before the tournament, have been disappointing in Brazil so far. It took a last-minute piece of Lionel Messi brilliance to dig them out of a hole against Iran and the whole team are yet to impress as a cohesive unit. Even Messi has papered over what have actually been relatively lacklustre individual performances with goals in both games, how long can he keep dragging his side through?

(41 Mins)

Enyeama warms up before the big game.

(39 Mins)

A win for Argentina today will see them progress as group winners and avoid a probable last 16 clash with France. Nigeria only need a point to go through but defeat today and a win for Iran against the already eliminated Bosnia will send the Super Eagles home.

(38 Mins)

Lionel Messi prepares to take on Nigeria.

(34 Mins)

It has just been announced that Argentina centre-back Ezequiel Garay has signed for Zenit St Petersburg in Russia. The former Benfica man had been a long-term target of Manchester United amongst others. Will his impending switch be on his mind today?

(30 Mins)

Nigeria also name the same eleven as last time out against Bosnia. Stoke Citys Peter Odemwingie was their hero in that game with his first-half strike earning them a vital 1-0 win.

(28 Mins)

So Argentina are unchanged, Alejandro Sabella resists the temptation to revert back to the back three he played during the first half of his sides opener against Bosnia. Fernando Gago retains his place in midfielder while Gonzalo Higuain will continue in the centre of the Argentine attack.

(26 Mins)

Nigeria (4-2-3-1): Enyeama; Ambrose, Omeruo, Tobo, Oshaniwa; Onazi, Mikel; Odemwingie, Babatunde, Musa; Emenike.

(25 Mins)

Argentina (4-3-3): Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Fernandez, Rojo; Gago, Di Maria, Mascherano; Aguero, Higuain, Messi.

(25 Mins)

The line-ups are in so that sounds like as good a place as any to begin.
