Portugal vs Ghana, Group G, FIFA World Cup 2014

Portugal: World number 4 Portugal depends a lot on their talismanic captain Christiano Ronaldo to guide them through the group stages. He single-handedly brought them to the World Cup and his fitness will decide their progress in the tournament. That said, Portugal are known for their unity and perform above expectation at major finals.

Ghana: The African nation had a dream run in the 2010 world cup and was knocked out of the cup in cruel fashion. This time though things look very difficult for the Ghanians as they have been placed with USA, Portugal and Germany. Ghana does boast of some star names like Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan but qualification from the group looks a tall order.

The two sides are meeting for the first time.

(95 Mins)

Boye slices in an own-goal.

(94 Mins)

Amorim gets his shot off with the near post looking dangerously unguarded. He aims for the gap from outside the box but drags the effort wide.

(93 Mins)

That goal all stemmed from a really promising Ghana attack. Atsu was about to be played in over on the right in acres of space but the ball rebounded off the referee and landed perfectly for Portugal to launch a counter-attack. Counter-attack they did and the move ended up with Boye turning the ball into his own net.

(91 Mins)

The Portuguese have got the bit between their teeth now as Ronaldo feints inside and drives a shot towards goal which is well saved by Dauda.

(90 Mins)

Portugal 1-0 Ghana. Boye has sliced the ball comically into his own net. Its a wicked ball in from Veloso and the defender swings a leg at the ball, only succeeding in deflecting it past his own goalkeeper.

(88 Mins)

Atsu wins and then takes a corner over on the right. The ball is aimed towards Gyan but he can only head the ball straight out of play under pressure.

(87 Mins)

The Portuguese almost threaten to break through the Ghanaian defence with Ronaldo but his through ball to Veloso forces him wide and the eventual cross is easily dealt with.

(86 Mins)

Ronaldo wins a free-kick which Portugal elect to take early. Unfortunately they also elect to give the ball to Nani to cross and the winger can only balloon the ball out of play with his weaker foot.

(85 Mins)

Dauda denies Ronaldo from point-blank range.

(84 Mins)

Ghana win a corner and its won in the air by Mensah. The ball comes back out and then back in via a cross. It eventually goes behind for another corner and this time Portugal get the ball away.

(82 Mins)

Carvalho makes a late challenge on Agyemang Badu and the midfielder is receiving some treatment. He looks fine to continue though. The free-kick is curled in by Asamoah and headed towards goal by Gyan but the effort is weak and Beto can catch with ease.

(82 Mins)

Ronaldo comes close to opening the scoring.

(80 Mins)

Up the other end a route one ball gets Gyan in behind a napping Portuguese defence but his first time shot is saved by the feet of Beto. End-to-end stuff right now, quite literally.

(78 Mins)

Great save by Dauda! The Ghana keeper has denied Ronaldo from 6 yards out. The ball came in from out wide and Ronaldo was completely unmarked but his header is within reach of Dauda who blocks the ball to safety. The keeper celebrates that one like hed scored a goal himself, and rightly so.

(76 Mins)

Waris plays a ball in to Gyan who is lurking in the opposition box but the striker is closed down quickly by the Portuguese defence who steal back the ball before anything can develop.

(74 Mins)

Veloso slides in to block a cross from Atsu but a clever turn gives the Ghana winger some space to cross. He cant pick out a teammate in the box though and Beto comes out to claim the ball.

(73 Mins)

Ayew and Moutinho challenge for the ball.

(72 Mins)

Its well within range for Ronaldo and he smacks the ball towards goal with his familiar technique. Dauda is well placed to block the ball behind though and Ghana head the resulting corner clear.

(70 Mins)

Ronaldo goes down under a challenge from Agyemang Badu and the free-kick is given. Moutinho has managed to pick up a knock in the build up though and will have to leave the pitch to receive treatment.

(69 Mins)

Dauda almost gets himself into a mess trying to deal with a long ball over the top. The keeper ventures out of his area to control the ball which is bouncing around dangerously with Portuguese attackers in close proximity. Dauda eventually manages to volley the ball to safety but that was risky.

(67 Mins)

Veloso gets a ball in from the left but Eders touch in the box is poor when he had space to manoeuvre and Ghana win back possession.

(67 Mins)

Can this man be the hero for Portugal?

(65 Mins)

So close to the opener from Ronaldo! That was almost a very, very special goal from Portugals main man. He escaped his marker and found some space on the right-hand edge of the box. Its the perfect position to whip in a cross but Ronaldo has other ideas and smacks the ball towards goal and over Dauda only to see the ball smack against the crossbar.

(64 Mins)

Moutinho is down for Portugal with a head injury. The referee checks to see if hes okay and were all ready to continue.

(62 Mins)

Miguel Veloso will begin the game at left-back almost be default as the last left footed non-attacking player left standing in the Portugal squad. He was given a torrid time by Fabian Johnson last time out against the USA, can Christian Atsu do the same today?

(61 Mins)

The Ghana team line up before the game.

(60 Mins)

Could this be the last we see of Ronaldo in World Cup football? The Portugal star will be 33 by the time the next tournament rolls around. He kicks us off here today.

(53 Mins)

Meanwhile Ghana have prepared for this one in nightmare fashion with senior players Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng being expelled from the squad for alleged indiscipline. Muntari would have been suspended for the game anyway and Boateng is yet to make an impact in this tournament but the infighting can hardly have helped morale in the Ghanaian camp.

(50 Mins)

Both these sides hopes hang by a thread as Group G comes to a conclusion. A draw between Germany and the USA in the simultaneous fixture will see both Ghana and Portugal heading home. Even if Portugal can muster a win against the African side they will also need to engineer an eight goal swing in goal difference between them and the USA to qualify. Its a tall order, even for the worlds best player.

(47 Mins)

Ghana (4-2-3-1): Dauda; Asamoah, Boye, Mensah, Afful; Rabiu, Badu; Atsu, Ayew, Waris; Gyan.

(46 Mins)

Portugal (4-3-3): Beto; Pereira, Alves, Pepe, Veloso; Moutinho, Carvalho, Amorim; Ronaldo, Eder, Nani.

(43 Mins)

Ghana fans await kick-off.
