Mexico Vs Netherlands, Round of 16 - Live Score

Netherlands Mexico

Netherlands vs Mexico, Second Round, FIFA World Cup 2014

Netherlands: Louis van Gaal’s side has been the best attacking team in the World Cup so far, winning all three of their group games and getting sweet revenge against World Champions Spain. With Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, the Dutch can destroy any side on a good day.

Mexico: Qualifying from Group A, Mexico played three very exciting but hard fought games and they look like a team very hard to beat. Under charismatic coach Miguel Herrera, Mexico look brave and believe they can take on anyone. With Guillermo Ochoa guarding their goal, it will be difficult to score against La Tri.

Netherlands 3 Wins, 1 Draw, Mexico 2 Wins

(179 Mins)

The Mexico curse continues. This is their sixth successive second round exit, theyve failed to reach the quarter finals since 1986 when they hosted the tournament. It looked like theyd done enough until late strikes from Sneijder and Huntelaars penalty.

(177 Mins)

The players fall to their knees. The Dutch cheering and waving their hands in the air. Mexico players with their heads in their hands, face down in the grass.

(177 Mins)

FULL TIME - Netherlands 2-1 Mexico

(176 Mins)

Mexico come forward but it looks like their curse of failing to reaching the quarterfinals since 1986 continues. Aquino fires in but Cillessen is equal to it.

(175 Mins)

Andres Guardado was booked for dissent as Netherlands waited to take the penalty.

(174 Mins)

Surely Netherlands have won it here. The last eight awaits with just two minutes left on the clock. A fantastic penalty by Huntelaar, he was kept waiting as Mexico protested to the referee but steps up and fires the penalty into bottom the left corner. Ochoa going the other way stood no chance.

(173 Mins)

Netherlands 2-1 Mexico (Huntelaar)

(173 Mins)

Huntelaar to take the penalty.

(172 Mins)

Mexicos dream is collapsing. Robben gets to the by-line and keeps the ball in, he tries to cut the ball back into the box but is brought down by Marquez who goes into the book.

(172 Mins)

(170 Mins)

There will be six minutes of injury time at the end of the second half. Is there another twist, can either side find a winner here or are we heading for Extra Time?

(168 Mins)

Heartbreak for Mexico at the death of the second half. The ball comes in from Robben and it finds Huntelaar who elects to head away from goal than toward. It looks an odd choice but the ball comes toward Sneijder who runs in and belts it on the volley. A rocket of a shot thats past Ochoa and puts Netherlands right back in this.

(168 Mins)

Netherlands 1-1 Mexico (Sneijder)

(167 Mins)

Depay tries a bit of skill and trickery down the left. And crosses the ball in but its headed clear. Netherlands need some magic at the moment, their 10th corner of the game coming up.

(165 Mins)

Ochoa again with an unbelievable save. A Netherlands cross is headed on and Huntelaar looks like hes beaten the offside trap and rises to try and volley a shot past Ochoa from a few yards out. Ochoa races out and makes a great block. It turns out not to matter as Huntelaar was offside but Ochoa wasnt to know. Great goalkeeping.

(164 Mins)

Aquino is causing all sorts of grief since hes come on. Pressuring and pressing the Dutch backline and midfield who are having to resort to long balls up to Huntelaar and Robben.

(162 Mins)

All Mexico at the moment who are camped deep in the Netherlands half but cant find the final pass through to Hernandez or Aquino. Nine minutes left for the Dutch players to save their World Cup dream.

(159 Mins)

Almost an immediate impact from Mexico on the restarts. Carlos Salcido breaks through a challenge from Martins Indi and gets a shot away thats way off target.

(159 Mins)

PLAY CONTINUES - The players have had a drink and were back underway in the second half.

(156 Mins)

COOLING BREAK - Netherlands make a substitution with Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar replacing Robin van Persie who hasnt had the best of days. Thats the last action before the referee signals for a second half cooling break and there will be a pause in play for three minutes.

(155 Mins)

8th corner for the Netherlands coming up but not before Mexico make a change. Javier Hernandez is coming on for Oribe Peralta.

(154 Mins)

Another brilliant Ochoa save. Robben looks like hes on a one man mission to get Netherlands back into this he sprints through the Mexico box and avoids a lunging Marquez challenge before firing in with his right foot. Ochoa is equal to it and keeps it out.

(151 Mins)

A seventh corner for the Dutch team again comes to nothing. It might not surprise you to hear that Netherlands have only scored from open play this tournament and have no goals from set-pieces.

(149 Mins)

Aguilar is the first player to go into the book this afternoon after a heavy challenge on Memphis Depay. Another chance for the Oranje from a set-piece.

(148 Mins)

Big shout for a penalty from Robben. Layun and Moreno are challenging the Dutch forward on the right, he skips past Moreno but stumbles over Layun and is down in the box. Maybe should have been a booking for a dive for the Bayern Munich man. Mexico certainly arent impressed.

(146 Mins)

Netherlands will be hoping substitute Memphis Depay can have a similar impact to his last two appearances off the bench in this competition. Hes scored in both of his first two World Cup games and if he scores today it will be the first time a players has scored as a substitute in his first three appearances at a World Cup.

(145 Mins)

Its all Netherlands right now. Another corner in from Robben but its again cleared by a committed Mexico defence. It comes out to Blind but his long range effort is just wide

(143 Mins)

Heart in mouth moment for Mexico Robben shifts from left to right and past Layun, he puts a delicate cross into the box but its just above Sneijder and is just wide of Ochoas post. Any touch and that was probably in.

(142 Mins)

"OCHOA" shout the Mexico fans in the stands. Absolutely astonishing save from the goalkeeper minutes ago.

(141 Mins)

Giovani Dos Santos is replaced before the corner is taken and Javier Aquino comes on.

(140 Mins)

Netherlands have certainly upped the tempo and almost score. Robben with a mazey run down the right side of the field, he cuts in and passes to Sneijeder. The midfielder shoots first time and its deflected and almost loops in. Dutch corner.

(137 Mins)

Incredible save by Ochoa. A Netherlands corner comes in and find De Vrij whos running in and volleys toward goal with his right boot from less than 2 yards. It looks for all the world like hes going to score but Ochoa is there and pushes the shot onto the post and away from point blank range. Mexico still 1-0 up thanks to Ochoas heroics.

(136 Mins)

Memphis Depay is coming on and replacing Paul Verhaegh. An attacking change for the Dutch side as Van Gaal tries to work his side back into this.

(135 Mins)

Peralta lets fly with left footed shot from distance that curls toward the top left corner but is easy for Cillessen who snatches it out of the air.

(135 Mins)

Great celebrations from Mexico who havent reached the quarter-final stages of the World Cup since they hosted the competition in 1986.

(134 Mins)

Netherlands come forward again and Robben is standing over a corner. It breaks to Daley Blind who shoots from distance but its well wide.

(133 Mins)

But Netherlands have a free-kick now which Robben and Sneijder are standing over. The Dutch shouldnt bee too disheartened, seven times in this World Cup has the side thats conceded first fought back to win.

(131 Mins)

Great Mexico build up almost gets them in again. Dos Santos skips down the right wing and plays the ball across to Herrera, he exchanges a pass with Guardrado and then tries to get Dos Santos in again but its hooked clear.

(129 Mins)

Brilliant techniques for Dos Santos. A ball is crossed in and headed clear from the Dutch defence. The cleared header bounces in front of Dos Santos and, under great pressure from Blind and Wijnaldum, Dos Santos fires a left footed shot into the bottom right corner from around 25 yards. Straight off the laces and straight pass Cillessen.

(128 Mins)

Netherlands 0-1 Mexico (Dos Santos)

(127 Mins)

Peralta almost bundles the ball past Stefan de Vrij as Mexico come forward in numbers.

(126 Mins)

As expected Hector Moreno has been replaced at the break due to injury. Diego Reyes comes on in his place.

(126 Mins)

And were back underway for the second half.

(124 Mins)

The sides are back out on pitch for the start of the second half. Neither team will want to go behind in this weather. Though this match-up certainly has had its fair share of come-backs. When these two sides met at the 1998 World Cup, Mexico came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in the last 15 minutes of the group game match.

(118 Mins)

The heat though looks the biggest competition this afternoon. Its incredibly hot in Fortaleza this afternoon and the temperature looks like it has affected the speed of both sides with the game played at a much slower pace than other World Cup matches.

(115 Mins)

However, Mexico too have excellent second half pedigree, 10 of their last 12 World Cup goals too have come during the second half and theyve scored a goal in each of their last 11 World Cup matches against Europeans side, losing just two of those games.

(113 Mins)

The good news for the Dutch side is that eight of their last nine World Cup goals have come in the second half so will be fully confident they can get through this Mexico side after the break.

(111 Mins)

Some good play in the first half but neither side could break through and score. Mexico probably had the better opportunities but Netherlands look comfortable to hold Mexico back and wait for their chance to break.

(111 Mins)

HALF TIME - Netherlands 0-0 Mexico

(109 Mins)

Moreno looks in some serious discomfort and is getting treatment from doctors and physios. A stretcher is brought on field and the defender is brought off injured on the stroke of half-time.

(107 Mins)

Netherlands break and van Persie tries to play through Robben. The winger has Marquez and Moreno for company and Robben beats Marquez for speed however Morena flies in two footed and cleans out Robben. Good opportunity for the Dutch side and they could have had a penalty but the referee waves play on.

(106 Mins)

There will be four minutes of added time at the end of this first half. The additional time has been extended to make up for the three minutes lost in the cooling break.

(103 Mins)

Dos Santos then takes exception to an aggressive Martins Indi challenge and the referee has to calm down both sides before awarding a free-kick to Mexico.

(102 Mins)

Dos Santos races on to the end of an incisive Mexico move, he looks too far wide to score but tries a shot that Cillessen parries away with his legs.

(101 Mins)

The heat is definitely taking its toll on both sides, players shirts are drenched with sweat. A ball is lofted in toward Van Persie but Rodriguez gets back and clear the ball from the Dutchmans head with a high boot.

(99 Mins)

Kuyt gets in around the back off the Mexico wingers for the first time but has a heavy touch and Marquez gets back to cover.

(98 Mins)

Mexico enjoy another bit of possession and get forward but Layuns cross is weak and easily handled by the Dutch defence.

(95 Mins)

And we are back underway in this first half.

(94 Mins)

Both sides have headed for their respective dugouts to get some well needed water. Maybe just an instance for each sides coach to provide a little tactical insight to their players.

(92 Mins)

As expected before the match, the first half has been paused around the half hour mark for a Cooling Break due to the extreme heat conditions in Fortaleza. The match should resume in three minutes time.

(91 Mins)

COOLING BREAK - Netherlands enjoy an extended spell of possession in the Mexico half much to the annoyance of the South American sides fans who whistle loudly. It comes to nothing and the referee blows his whistle to signal a cooling break.

(88 Mins)

Up the other end Peralta rides three Dutch challenges and evades Vlaar before laying the ball off to Dos Santos who shoots first time off his left but its easy for Cillessen.

(87 Mins)

Van Persie brings down a great ball in the Mexico box with an outstanding first touch off his left foot. The ball bounces and he fires toward Ochoas goal with his right but its nowhere near on target.

(85 Mins)

Was this worthy of a yellow card of penalty? Mexico were unhappy with Ron Vlaars high booted challenge. Meanwhile, Wijnaldum is off the pitch receiving treatment on his eye.

(84 Mins)

Salcido takes aim from distance after finding himself with time and space around 35 yards out. Cillessen gets there and pushes it clear but hardly looked convincing. Netherlands are wobbling at the moment.

(81 Mins)

Calls for a penalty from Mexico. Herrera gets forward and tries to stick his head on the end of a long Mexico ball. But whilst de Vrij challenges Herrera on the ground Ron Vlaar flies in with a high foot and almost catches the Mexican midfielder on the head. Dangerous play from the Aston Villa man?

(79 Mins)

Netherlands respond. Verhaegh gets forward and sends a low cross in toward van Persie, its behind the striker who pulls Marquez down and Mexico have a free kick.

(77 Mins)

So close from Mexico, it was inches away. The ball is crossed in to Dos Santos in the Dutch box who has great control and passes to Peralta. Its just behind the forward man who is forced to turn around on the ball and take a touch. He finds Herrera who eases past Vrij and fires low to the bottom left corner but its wide.

(76 Mins)

Robben shows his speed and races down the left. He tries to get past Rodriguez and square the ball to Van Persie but Marquez makes a great tackle. Robben claiming the ball came off his arm but no reaction from referee Proenca.

(75 Mins)

The Mexico fans are certainly making themselves heard in the Estadio Castelao. Every goal kick is greeted with whistle and shouts and theyre urging their side forward at every opportunity.

(73 Mins)

Ron Vlaar gets himself in trouble as Peralta skips past him and gets a cross in, but its too short for Dos Santos. Then Layun gets forward and past Verhaegh but his dangerous, whipped in cross finds no green shirts.

(71 Mins)

A very big loss for the Dutch, de Jong was a key man during their group games. And the substitution may have unsettled the Oranje as Mexico string some intricate passes together and come up the field.

(69 Mins)

And de Jong is replaced very early by Bruno Martins Indi. An injury you would presume for de Jong as hes only lasted nine minutes, unclear though what that injury might be as the midfielder jogs off and slaps Van Gaals hand.

(-1058994263 Mins)

Cillessen called into action and it wasnt the best of clearances. The ball is played through the Netherlands midfield and Peralta is almost on the end of it but the Dutch keeper gets there first. His clearance, however, almost falls to Mexico feet but de Jong gets it clear.

(65 Mins)

Robin van Persie comes forward and looks to put Robben through on goal but its over-hit and rolls through to Ochoa who boots it clear. At the other end Layuns on the end of a good Mexico move once more but again has to shoot from distance and his shot rolls well wide.

(62 Mins)

Left wing-back Miguel Layun gets forward early for Mexico, cuts inside and lets fly from his right boot. Always rising and just over, Cillessen had it covered.

(61 Mins)

KICK OFF - Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca blows his whistle and gets us underway. Netherlands in their classic, full orange kit. Mexico with green shirts and white shorts.

(59 Mins)

The teams are out, the anthems have been played and we are minutes away from kick off. A prior warning to kick off, FIFA have said that a cooling break will be allowed for the teams after 30 minutes in each half due to the extreme heat in Fortaleza so the match will most likely stop after thirty minutes in each half for a two minute period.

(57 Mins)

Robin van Persie is back in the starting XI after a suspension against Chile, Bruno Martins Indi is only fit enough for the bench so Dirk Kuyt starts and wins is 100th international cap, the seventh Dutch player to reach that milestone. Talisman Arjen Robben has scored or assisted seven goals in his last seven World Cup appearances and will be hoping to add to his record today.

(55 Mins)

The Netherlands on the other hand will be hoping to keep their perfect record in the second round of World Cups. The Dutch side have won nine of their last 10 World Cup games with their only defeat at the hands of Spain in the 2010 World Cup Final in South Africa.

(53 Mins)

In terms of team news Jose Vasquez is serving a one match ban so Salcido replaces him in the Mexico midfield. Hero against Brazil, goalkeeper Ochoa keeps his place in the starting XI and Javier Hernandez still starts on the bench despite scoring against Croatia.

(50 Mins)

Mexico are the only North, Central American or Caribbean nation to record a win against a European side in a World Cup knockout round since 1945 but have had five successive exits at this stage in their last five World Cups. Theyll be hoping that changes today.

(47 Mins)

We see a Netherlands side who have had the best attack so far at the World Cup with 10 goals against Mexico who have the joint best defence after only conceding one goal in their three group games.

(44 Mins)

Hello and welcome to the live coverage of Netherlands v Mexico from the Estadio Castelao in a very hot Fortaleza.
