Twelve-year-old Natraj Vairavan, of Fremont, Calif., showed his will and skill to own the kitchen during his face-off against three other young aspiring chefs on “Chopped Junior,” the popular cooking competition show on the Food Network, which pits pre-teens against each other.

Showcasing his culinary skills during the episodic challenges July 12, the young Indian American contestant sliced, diced, shredded and conjured up a range of dishes in the appetizer, entrée and dessert rounds, which involved transforming a basket full of unusual ingredients into tasty recipes.

The show, hosted by Ted Allen, is judged by chefs Carla Hall and Chris Santos and model Jourdan Dunn.

For the appetizer challenge, the culinary whiz kid prepared smoked chicken salad with pickled red onion crostini, juniper berries, star anise and nutmeg in an effort to win the title and a prize of $10,000. He impressed the judges with his recipe of goat curry and jasmine rice with fried turnips in the entrée round, which helped him make his way to the finals. Even though he won appreciation for his caramel apple pie with cheddar cheese ice cream in the dessert round, he lost the competition to Nicholas Bruzzano, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
