Cleanup is an essential beauty treatment that helps keep our skin flawless. As the name suggests, it has basic cleaning ritual that is necessary to remove the built-up dirt in the skin. Most salons offer cleanups and depending on the salon you visit, the treatment can cost you anything between Rs 400 to Rs 1,000. And due to pollution and dirt, we require a cleanup every month. If you do not want to shell out so much money every month, you can follow this step-by-step guide to do a cleanup at home yourself. You may have to buy a few things but you can reuse them every time you do a cleanup. (ALSO SEE Face packs to get naturally fair skin at home)

Things you need for a cleanup:

Face steamer

Face wash

Face scrub

Face pack

Rosewater

Cotton ball

Tweezer/Blackhead remover

Cloth hair band

Water

Ice cube

Mirror

Tissue

Sunscreen

How to do a cleanup:

face wash

Step 1: First, wash your face using a face wash to remove any residue of oil and dirt. Pat it dry. Wear an elastic hair band made of cloth so that no hair falls on your face. You can tie the hair in a ponytail if you like. (ALSO SEE Natural cleansers to get rid of makeup)

Step 2: Fill the steamer with water and turn it on. Now, let your face take this steam so that your pores open. You may feel a little uncomfortable due to the vapour on your face but take it as much as you can so that dirt can be removed from the skin. Five minutes are sufficient to open the pores. In case you do not have a face steamer, you can boil water in a vessel, place it on a platform and then using a towel to cover the sides, take steam on your face.

Step 3: Now using a tweezer or blackhead remover, tweeze out the black and white heads from your forehead, nose and chin area. These are a little stubborn so you may feel a little pain while doing so. Do this in front of a mirror so you can see the black and white heads. Wipe off your face with a tissue once done.

face scrub

Step 4: Rub an ice cube on your face as this will tighten the pores and not let any dirt settle in. Now use a mild scrub on your face. This will further remove the dead skin cells that accumulate over time. Apply the scrub in a circular motion and then wash off with water. You can use a scrub available in stores or make a natural one at home using ingredients like coarse coffee powder or sugar mixed with honey. (ALSO SEE Beauty benefits of ice cubes)

Step 5: After the scrub comes the face pack. Choose one based on your skin type. Multani mitti is good for oily skin while malai is good for dry and normal skin. For acne-prone skin, you can choose neem face pack. Let the face pack stay on for 10 to 15 minutes before you wash it off with water. (ALSO SEE Homemade scrubs to remove dead skin cells)

Step 6: You are almost done with just a few things left to end your cleanup. Put a few drops of rosewater on a cotton ball and then apply this on your face. Rosewater acts as a toner and helps close the pores as well as freshens the skin.

sunscreen

Step 7: Once the rosewater dries up, apply sunscreen on your face. If you have dry skin, you can opt for a moisturizing sunscreen. And now, you are done with your cleanup. Wasn’t it easy doing it yourself at home and also saving up money in the process? (ALSO SEE How to choose the right sunscreen)

You can do a cleanup once a month to keep your skin looking gorgeous.
