The story of the Kohinoor is as fascinating as it is bloody. Mined near Guntur in Andhra Pradesh around the 13th century, the Kohinoor once weighed 158.6 grams or 793 carats and was first owned by Kakatiya dynasty. Since then the stone has changed hands multiple times with warring kingdoms in south Asia for at least a few hundred years. Finally, it landed in the possession of Queen Victoria following the British conquest of the Punjab in 1849. For all its value, Kohinoor is believed to be a cursed stone and is said to bring bad luck to any man who wears it, which is why only the female members of the British Royal Family wear the Kohinoor. You might imagine that everything that has to be said about the Kohinoor that has already been said. However, Anita Anand and William Dalrymple have dug up Sanskrit, Persian and Urdu sources that were untranslated so far and along with high tech discoveries of modern gemologists have revealed a newer albeit darker and more violent history of the world’s most famous diamond. Their book, Kohinoor: The Story of the World’s Most Infamous Diamond promises to reveal what they call the ‘diamond’s true history… stranger, and more violent, than any fiction’.
