What is facial serum?

Serums are light molecular weight moisturizers. The ingredients in a serum penetrate deeper in the skin giving the desired results. Regular use of a serum can give one a firmer, softer skin with a better texture.

How often can you use serum?

Once or twice daily use is generally recommended.Generally more than that is usually not recommended.

Is serum a moisturizer?

Serum is a better version of a moisturizer. Moisturizers usually contain petrolatum, mineral oil that occlude the skin whereas serum being light-weighted, doesn’t cause any occlusion. As a result for oily skin or normal skin serums are preferred better. The skin does not tend to look oily after its application. Also, less quantity is required, so it lasts long. However when it comes to dry skin, serums cannot replace the moisturizers. Moisturizers maintain the water in the skin which serums cannot do so.

What’s the difference between serum and facial oil?

Facial oils are more occlusive and oily. Serums are non-occlusive and dry.

How to choose different serums for different skin types?

Depending upon the skin type one can choose different serums. Antioxidant rich serums (containing Vitamin C) help in preventing oxidative stress from pollution and UV radiation. Hence it should be used in mornings with a sunscreen.

Serums rich in growth peptides help to boost collagen and elastin production and restore firmness of the skin. Hence it can be used at night as an anti-ageing or night cream.

Serums formulated with brightening agents like retinol, kojic acid etcetera can help accelerate cellular regeneration and brighten the skin and make it appear more bright and smooth. Serums rich in essential oils and Omega-3 fatty acids can help the skin repair itself overnight.
