World Egg Day is observed on the second Friday of the month October every year to celebrate the egg as a wonderful yet affordable food item that is rich in proteins and other nutrients. The day is observed to raise awareness about its importance in everyday life and its health benefits. World Egg Day was first celebrated in 1996. Eggs are a great source of choline, a compound that is important for the development of the brain and for memory. It is considered as a superfood as it is loaded with vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids apart from proteins. Here are some health benefits of eggs. Eggs are used across the world in different forms from scrambled eggs to curry to omelets. It is also used in the preparation of baked items like cakes.
Many people also eat it raw as a smoothie or as it is. One of the reasons people drink raw egg is because raw egg provides more micronutrients. It is considered that eggs provide more proteins quickly when eaten uncooked. However, studies have shown that cooked egg is better as the process of cooking denatures the protein present in the egg and it helps in better digestion of the egg by your stomach. Consumption of more raw eggs can also cause biotin deficiency. Biotin is a vitamin and coenzyme, essential for your metabolism. The risk of biotin deficiency increases in those who drink more raw eggs. Drinking raw egg prevents the absorption of biotin by the body because of the presence of avidin, a protein that binds to biotin. Deficiency of biotin can lead to seizure, skin infection, low immunity and thinning of hair. Eggs, when cooked, do not interfere with the absorption of biotin. So, if you are planning to drink raw egg with milk to build your muscles and bulk, talk to your doctor about how safe it is before you start consuming it.
