MCD Elections: Dates, facts, figures; all you need to know about Delhi municipal polls
Know dates, facts, figures for MCD Elections 2017.
New Delhi, Mar 16: The State Election Commission on Tuesday announced that the municipal polls in Delhi to the three municipal corporations will be held on April 23, while the counting of votes will be done on April 26. After the civic elections in Mumbai last month, all eyes are now set on the Delhi municipal elections which will witness an interesting three-cornered contest between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Congress.
While the municipal elections will be a popularity test for AAP in Delhi after its poor performance in Goa and Punjab Assembly Elections, for BJP, it will be a case of saving its reputation in Delhi since it will be trying to hold on to the reins of the three municipal corporations for the third consecutive time. The civic polls will also see a heated-up campaigning from BJP and AAP, and political bickering between the state government, the BJP led-Centre and the three civic bodies.
The model code of conduct has already been enforced from March 14. Here’s a list of key dates to remember for municipal polls.
These are some facts and figures.
There were three major parties that contested in MCD Elections 2012- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). While BJP emerged as a winner in all the three municipal corporations with a total of 138 out of 272 seats, Congress managed the second position with 77 seats.
Let’s look at how parties fared in North Delhi Municipal Corporation:
In North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), BJP won 59 seats out of 104 in NDMC. Congress stood at the second position with only 29 wards and BSP could gather only 7.
In East Delhi Municipal Corporation, BJP won a total of 35 out of 64 wards. Congress managed the second position with only 19 seats while BSP could gather only three seats.
In South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), BJP, yet again, emerged as a winner gathering a total of 44 out of 104 wards, while Congress managed only 29.
All the three MCDs will go to poll on April 23 and results will be declared on April 26, 2017. All the three MCDs are ruled by BJP since the party won a total of 138 wards in 2012 MCD elections. However, after a poor performance in Goa and Punjab, will AAP be able to take the MCD throne this time and hold the reins of Delhi? Or would it be BJP again ruling over the municipal corporations once again?
Before MCD elections, a pretty significant test for AAP would be bypoll to the Rajouri Garden assembly seat which will be held on April 9. In the municipal by-elections, the AAP had managed to win only five out of 13 seats but had swept the Delhi assembly polls in 2015 winning 67 out of a total of 70 seats.
The most obvious question that now arises is will the loss in Goa and Punjab affect the political landscape?
