Movie Review: Julie & Julia

Half gloomy, half marvelous

Julia & Julia is passably entertaining as Merryl Streep and Amy Adams shine in this girly drama based on two true stories which is heartfelt and deliciously shot.

Directed by Nora Ephron, Julie & Julia is an adaptation of Julia Child's memoir "My Life in France" and Julie Powell's book "Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen". Just so you know, Noran Ephron has made some of the finest romantic dramedies like 'Sleepless in Seattle', 'You've Got Mail', the hilarious 'Mixed Nuts' and has written 'When Harry met Sally'. Julie & Julia serves up two true stories for the price of one and is quite unmissable for food and casual film lovers.

The film follows Julie Powell (Amy Adams) as she sets out to make every one of the 524 recipes in Julia Child's (Merryl Streep) "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" cookbook over the course of one year and blog about the experience. While this is the film's backbone, the other half of the film cuts back in time into the life of Child and her life in France learning to cook and writing said cookbook. Julie Powell's story is shot in her dim rundown appartment. Although, her character is strangely unlikeable (or maybe it is because Powell admits she is a bitch and her best friend agrees with that fact).

However Meryl Streep gives an all-time performance as kitchen legend Julia Child and the always quirky Stanley Tucci matches her step-for-step as her loving husband Paul. The relationship between Paul and Julia Child is totally believable. The film serves two hours of ups and downs as laughter, friendship, love, mutual respect make Julias story while nothing but gloom comes along Julie's way.

All in all, Julie & Julia is perfectly pleasant but slight. Watch it for Merryl Streep's story arc and her winning performance - the legend could could well earn yet another Oscar nomination.
