Movie Review: Pyaar ImpossibleStupefyingly inane
Pyaar Impossible is a mind numbing travesty that ought to be avoided at all costs. One would expect Priyanka Chopra to pick great projects, or at least decent ones. What went wrong? How did she go from starring in quality cinema to playing one of the most unlikable and asinine lead characters I can remember in romantic-comedy history? This film is a different breed of stupid as it follows all the stereotypical plot points of a girl falling for the man of her dreams, but doesn't realize it until the last second. Pyaar Impossible goes down as Priyanka's most irritating and unfunniest film to date, and bear in mind, I have seen 'Chamku' and 'Love Story 2050'. It is also now the leading candidate for the worst film of 2010. A talented director might have made the leads seem like comic geniuses, but Jugal Hansraj has no control over tone, leaving the audience unsure whether to laugh or cry. Mistaking cute and quirky for teeth-grindingly obnoxious, Pyaar Impossible is a most infuriating moviegoing experience. Its painfully bland, vapid, annoying and consistently preposterous, apart from being low on laughs and satirical bite. This kind of premise is touchy, because it's that kind of humor that comes from awkwardness. It's kind of sad and a little dark. It needs to be handled just the right way, but unfortunately Uday Chopra's script falls hopelessly flat. There's no footing in reality. Blame it on the Yash Raj candyfloss formula. Nothing about Pyaar Impossible feels authentic, not the galling hyperactive Alisha (Priyanka), not the lifeless secondary characters(furniture Dino Morea), not the bromide-happy dialogue or the plot that twists less often than it spasms. Uday Chopra tries really hard to impress as the goofball, the cute but weird ugly duckling. The chemistry between the leads is nonexistent and so lunkheaded and ill-conceived that it makes your average, idiotic Diya Mirza-Fardeen Khan outing look like the reincarnation of Jaya and and Amitabh Bachchan. So what did I actually like about Pyaar Impossible? Santosh Thundiyil's glossy cinematography for one. And Priyanka Chopra's perfectly made up visage. But the bubble-gummy score by Salim-Sulaiman is grating and restores the testiness and nausea within you. Pyaar Impossible is an unmitigated disaster. There's simply no point for it to exist. Its not just dumb, it's dopey, moronic, doltish, obtuse and thick. To endure this sorry excuse of a Yash Raj heap is Mission Impossible.
