The juice on Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender

Combination on Matrix and Star Wars

M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Last Airbender' is easily one of the most anticipated films of 2010, not just because its from the director of 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Signs' but also because the film is based on the massively popular 'Avatar' series.

'The Last Airbender' was originally named 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' but due to a certain similar sounding little movie Shyamalan had to change the title of his project. Apparently Shyamalan's seven-year-old daughter was the one who persuaded him to take on the project. "She made us watch as a family and all four of us were hooked," Shyamalan said. "I was like, 'This would make a killer movie. And my wife who really has been kind of in neutral about my career was insane about it. Insane about it: 'You have to do it. This is it. This is the one.'"

The quality of Shyamalan's films have waned over the past three years, with such underwhelming movies as 'The Village', 'Lady in the water' and the hilarious 'The Happening'. Although those films did look great, their problem was the script. 'The Last Airbender' should make for a good change of style for the director, who has incidentally refused to helm 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. When we come to think about it, that horrendous film would have been excellent had Shyamalan directed it.

Shyamalan says that 'The Last Airbender' is a mixture of Star Wars and The Matrix, drawing the Buddhist philosophy from the films. "Aang himself needs to find balance to be the Avatar and to master each of these elements," the director said. "We get to see the process of someone mastering themselves through the three seasons to get to peace. In the first 'Matrix,' you realize that what you're seeing is all false," Shyamalan said. "Those are really ancient ideas. Basic old, old religion. This has that as well. So if you go on the journey and you’ll feel that epiphany on top of a great roller-coaster ride. It’s going to be something."

Below is the trailer of 'The Last Airbender'. Do give it a watch. Notice Jamaal Malik from 'Slumdog Millionaire' (Dev Patel) plays the villain Zoku in this film. 'The Last Airbender' is being targeted for a July 2nd 2010 release.

Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film is set in a world where human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire. The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. The film's hero, the reluctant young Aang (Noah Ringer), is the 'Last Airbender' — the Avatar who, according to prophecy, has the ability to manipulate all of the elements and bring all the nations together.

Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her bull-headed brother Sokka, Aang proceeds on a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Dev Patel plays the Fire Nation's evil prince Zuko. Exiled from the Fire Nation by his father, Zuko is sent to capture the Avatar in order to restore his honor and right to the throne.
